Alice had smiled widely and brought her hands up to her cheeks, as she studied her relative. "Oh, Edith, you're simply beautiful!" she complimented with a elated tone in her voice. "I wouldn't mind if you stayed like this, you know!" After her reassuring statement, she looked to Edith's eyes, while continuing to smile happily. "Couldn't you just for a day? Please?" Alice clasped her hands together and bent her elbows in a longing manner. At this point, it was all too obvious that Alice had a penchant for horses.

Edith hesitated for a moment. She didn't want to hurt Alice's feelings by refusing her offer, but she also knew that she needed to return to her human form before Merlin returned.
"I'm not so sure," Edith finally said. "How would we keep Merlin from finding out?"

Fortunately for Edith, Alice came to her senses. Her very eager smile subsided, and she calmed herself. She inhaled and then exhaled before answering with an understanding tone. "I suppose not." She nodded and bent to pick up the book and wand (which she placed in an apron pocket. "You are a lovely horse, but..." She didn't finish the sentence. Using both hands, she read through some more pages of the book. When she found a page she thought could be useful, she moved the book to just her left hand, and picked up the wand from her pocket with her right hand. She aimed the wand to the horse and, not surprisingly, read the incantation aloud.
Also with no surprise, smoke engulfed Edith. When it cleared, the once purple horse was now a purple deer. "Well, Edith," Alice said with indifference; "I suppose you make a beautiful animal all the time!" She pocked her wand again and, with both hands, turned through pages. Her eyes remained on the book while Edith was a deer.

"That's very kind of you," Edith said in response to Alice's comment.
Just then, Edith's attention was drawn towards a salt container on the nearby table. Being so careful as to knock anything over, she approached the table and extended her neck so that she could reach the salt container.
"I don't know why I'm so drawn to this salt," Edith thought to herself, "but I suddenly feel a craving for it."

"Hm?" Alice looked up from the book and furrowed her eyebrows when she saw her sister's blatant interest in the salt container. "Oh. But, Edith, you shouldn't eat salt by itself. That couldn't possibly be good for your body!" After that statement, Alice widened her eyes, and she looked up to think. "Oh... but... I suppose it could be different if you are a deer, Edith." She thought in silence in a moment longer, before shrugging her shoulders and returning her attention to the book. But she soon looked from the book back to her sibling. "Edith," she said, "I'm sorry about what's happening to you. I didn't mean this to happen, you know." She bit her bottom lip, as her eyes expressed deep sympathy.

Edith finally managed to come to her senses and resisted the urge to lick the salt from the table.
"At least I still have some control over myself," she said. "Please do find the next spell!"

Alice nodded, then tilted her head downward to allow her eyes to skim through pages of the book. "I found another spell," she said shortly. Just after she had turned a page, in fact. She managed to hold the book with her left hand again as she used to right hand to retrieve the wand from her apron pocket and point it to the transmogrified Edith. Alice read aloud the bizarre text and, following another fog of magical smoke, looked up to find what Edith was transformed into then.
Edith was certainly shorter than a deer. She could also be much smellier if she wanted to; this is because Edith was now a purple, striped skunk. Alas, Alice did not recognize the animal.
"Oh, Edith!" Alice gasped, but she maintained her grasp on both the book and the wand. Her wide eyes studied her. "Now you're a....! My, I haven't the least idea what you are!"

Taking note of the reluctance in Alice's tone of voice, Edith decided to look at herself. She couldn't help but feel embarrassed when she saw her striped tail.
"Goodness gracious!" she shouted. "I'm a skunk!"

Alice thought for a moment in silence, before the smiled unconvincingly and shrugged her shoulders. "You make a pretty... skunk. You know?" He voice cracked at the last comment, which further proved the insincerity in her tone. She stopped her forced smile and bit her bottom lip, before clearing her throat and parting her lips to speak. "I am sorry, Edith," Alice said.

Edith couldn't bring herself to chastise Alice. After all, Alice was doing the best she could to turn her back to normal.
"Don't worry too much about it," said Edith. "I still think that being a pig is far more embarrassing."

Alice, wanting to be swift and not dawdle, returned her focus on the book, hastily searched for the next available spell, and pointed the wand to Edith as soon as she found such a workable spell. She read the instructions aloud, and then looked up from the book to wait for the expected smoke to clear. Once it was clear enough, Alice gasped, widened her eyes, and dropped what she held. The two objects fell to the floor, and Alice took two giant steps back. She pressed her hands against her chest as she shook her head in shock.
"Edith!" she screamed. "You're a bear!"
Indeed, what was once a pretty skunk was now a large, purple bear. Although the bear had Edith's distinctive eyes, it was still a fearsome sight to behold: a large bear inside a household!
Alice wondered why she reacted the way she did. It could be that she had, for a second, forgotten that her sister was the bear, and not a feral beast.

Realizing that her enormous size was intimidating her younger sister, Edith dropped down so as not to appear so threatening.
"I'm sorry if my appearance frightens you," Edith said.

It wasn't long before Alice had calmed herself down to a reasonable level. She lowered her hands and frowned in embarrassment. "I'm sorry, Edith," she sincerely apologized. "I shouldn't have been so frightened." She stepped to the dropped book and magic wand, and the younger sister bent to pick them up. For one last time, she found a page that looked less helpful than the many others, but she decided to give it a chance anyway.
Alice pointed the wand to the purple bear and read the inscription: "Snick-snack-snorrel," she said. As a large cloud of magical smoke engulfed Edith, Alice waited for said smoke to clear and reveal Edith's status. By that point, Alice was beginning to worry greatly. But, finally, her fears had ceased; when the smoke cleared, Edith was revealed to be back to her normal, human self!
"Goodness!" Alice exclaimed in shock. But this shock wasn't negative at all. She dropped the book and wand, and, before giving Edith much time to examine herself, ran and collided into the older sister, hugging her tightly. Alice closed her eyes and smiled very widely. "Oh, Edith! Edith! You're just right again!"

In that moment, Edith was overcome with feelings of great ecstacy. After what seemed like an eternity, she was once again a Victorian lady.
"Thank goodness!" Edith exclaimed. "I'm human once more!"
Not wanting to get carried away by her emotions, she quickly snapped back to reality.
"We had best straighten this place up so that Merlin won't know we have been practicing magic," she said to Alice.

Alice opened her eyes and pulled herself from the hug. She looked up to her sibling and nodded in agreement. "Yes," Alice replied. "I agree." The younger sister turned and bent to pick up the book and the magic wand. She returned both items to where they came from. This allowed Edith to help with the restoration of the residence, as well.

After making sure there was anything else that needed to be cleaned up or put back in place, Edith let out a sigh of relief.
"That's one less thing to worry about," Edith said. "Shall we wait until Merlin returns or shall we come back another day?"

Before Alice could respond to Edith after she had finished cleaning, the old wizard had returned without warning. The cottage's door swung open loudly, and a large squall entered the residence. A vortex of glittery, blue magic entered, and the vortex spiraled until Merlin materialized and slowed to a complete stop. This grand entrance rendered the wizard's hat to conceal his eyes, so he pulled the hat up to be normal again, and adjusted his glasses.
"I give up!" he exclaimed in frustration. He clutched his staff with both hands and shook his head, addressing no one but himself. "I'll search another day."
He scoffed, but then turned and noticed a familiar student. "Hm? Alice?" He smiled and stepped closer to her. "What a surprise! What are you doing here? You didn't have to come today, you know." He was focused on Alice, and because of this he had yet to notice Edith. While speaking to Alice, the wizard held his staff with his right hand.

Edith quickly turned around to see the elderly wizard standing in the doorway.
"This must be the wizard Merlin," Edith thought to herself.
Edith stepped forward to introduce herself.
"I don't mean to intrude," said Edith, hesitating at first. "I am Alice's older sister, Edith."

Merlin looked from Alice to the taller, older woman with brown hair. The elderly wizard stroked his beard and examined the woman. "Hmmm? Oh! So you're the sister Alice mentions often! You decided to come by? Well!" Merlin closed his eyes and tilted his head upward proudly, as he pressed the knob of his staff against his chest. "My name is Merlin, and I happen to be the world's most powerful wizard!" He opened his eyes and returned his focus to the brunette. "I'm delighted to meet you, Edith. You ought to be proud of having Alice as a sister, you know. Heh!" He turned and winked to Alice, playfully.

Edith began to feel more welcome in the wizard's abode. She found Merlin to be much friendlier than she had originally expected.
"A pleasure to meet you as well," Edith replied with a smile on her face.

Merlin smiled at his new acquaintance for a moment, before asking, "So, did Alice bring you here?" As he asked, he gestured his staff to Alice, pointing it directly at her.

"Yes, Merlin," Alice said to confirm Edith. "I'm sorry if I brought her without an invitation. Or me, too!" She looked downward, hiding her fear of doing something wrong.

Merlin closed his eyes and rapidly waved his hand to the young girl, while shaking his head. "Oh, no, no, no!" he exclaimed. He opened his eyes directed his attention to Edith. "I admit, I was preoccupied, but not now." After a brief pause he smiled and asked the brunette, "Would you care for tea, my dear?" Merlin did in fact have a tea table, although it was surrounded by large stacks of books, models, and other items of knowledge.

Only a short while after Merlin had arrived at the cottage, a little tawny owl flapped in through the front door. Archimedes always had some catching up to do behind the wizard, who used his magic to get from place to place too much for the owl's liking.
Archimedes glided over to his birdhouse perch and settled down with a little sigh, relieved to get some rest. It took the old owl a little while to notice the two girls occupying the cottage. Alice, he recognized... the other, he didn't. Missing the introductions, he quietly watched and listened, and eyed the strange woman, aloof as ever.

"I'd be delighted," Edith said in reply to Merlin's offer.
Edith sat down at the table and made herself at home. She was starting to feel much better after her various transformations. In fact, she was feeling so comfortable that she did not even notice the owl watching her closely.

Alice smiled happily, and sighed lightly with satisfaction. The events earlier in the day were confusing and shocking, but the day vastly improved greatly. Not only that, but Edith and Merlin were already befriending one another, at least from Alice's point of view. This made the girl elated.
Alice was also the only person in the room who really noticed Archimedes's arrival. Her smile only widened when she saw her feathered companion. She pressed her hands against the front of her skirt and she leaned forward as she addressed him. "Oh!" she exclaimed excitedly to the educated owl. "Hello, Archimedes!" She continued to speak to Archimedes, but she looked and gestured at her sister. "This is my sister, Edith." Alice followed this by saying, "Edith, meet Archimedes." She smiled all the time.

With a surprised little hoot, Archimedes hopped up and ruffled his feathers at his name suddenly being called out. He briefly looked over at Alice before she went ahead and introduced the strange woman, who was, apparently, her older sister. She had talked about her sister quite a bit, and to the owl she looked just as he would expect.
Archimedes looked Edith over a little more, still seeming rather dour and suspicious. He was forced to give a polite greeting, however difficult that was for him; he couldn't really be rude to a family member of Alice's, no less right in front of her.
After a faint, irritated sigh, he introduced himself. "... How do you do," was all he said, lightly nodding his head. That was as polite as he would get right now, though; with that, the little owl inched across his perch towards the hidden safety of his birdhouse.
