To recap what we already know, Guillermo Del Toro is one of the busiest filmmakers in Hollywood today, but he is dead set to produce a new movie based on the Haunted Mansion. The Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy director has previously revealed his love for the Disney Parks attraction, and even has an entire room in his home solely themed like the Haunted Mansion. Previously, few details were made public about Del Toro's upcoming movie: the movie will be scary and fun, but with greater emphasis on the scary; he's aiming for a PG-13 rating; the Hatbox Ghost will play a pivotal role, if not the main role; and "Eddie Murphy's calls are not being returned."
A few new details were released, though none of them concern the plot. According to Del Toro, the new movie is, "Going great. We are on the second draft of the screenplay. We have a huge show and tell, a series of boards, about 40 pieces of art... We are in full contact with Imagineering, and we are making sure that we are faithful not only to the mansion and the ride, but that we have the ride in the future reflect into the movie, and the movie into the ride." I don't know exactly what he meant about that last part, and I don't care to rush to conclusions.
Also, Jon Favreau's Magic Kingdom is progressing in development. Magic Kingdom's premise is similar to Night at the Museum: Disney Parks attractions and characters come alive after park hours. Favreau, who has directed movies such as Iron Man and most recently Cowboys & Aliens, and Del Toro have apparently talked about their projects, and they agreed that they would like to create a shared universe with their Disney movies, if possible, much like how the Marvel Studios movies are interconnected.
