Name: Professor Emelius Browne
Guilty Shame: He's not really a professor
Alias: Mr. Browne; Professor; Emelius
Age: Probably late 40's or early 50's
Is From: England; currently resides with Eglantine in Pepperinge Eye, England
Species: Human
Height: 6' 0¾"
Build: Physically fit
Gender: Male
Likes: Money; performing tricks or other feats and actually succeeding; Ms. Eglantine Price; the children
Dislikes: The Bookman and his crony; Nazis; dangerous confrontations
Normal Attire: A pull-over red sweater, a white button-up shirt, a brown jacket, black pants, sometimes white gloves, shoes and a well-worn hat; his socks have several holes
Powers: Emelius Browne came in the possession of a book of spells, and although for the majority of "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" he is unable to use magic, by the end he succeeded in believing in himself and was able to use a small spell of transformation
Strengths: Very cunning and crafty; since he was a con artist, he knows several tricks such as the "gypsy switch"; charisma; eventual magic powers; an amateur dancer, juggler and singer
Weaknesses: A little bit of a coward; sometimes gets himself and others in sticky situations; a former thief and conman, but now reformed
Allied With: Eglantine Price and her foster children; the old home guard of Pepperinge Eye
Mortal Enemy: King Leonidas (regretful); the Third Reich
History: Professor Emelius Browne is hardly a professor; a former swindler and ne'er-do-well, Emelius lived a life of crime. He pretended to be a magician, and although he knew some illusions he was mostly a poor illusionist.
That all changed when he met and eventually fell in love with Ms. Eglantine Price. During World War II, Emelius came in the possession of a book of magic spells. With this book, he started a fraudulent "Correspondence College of Witchcraft," and, amazingly, he had one legitimately interested student: Eglantine Price. Eglantine practiced witchcraft in the hopes of learning the one spell that could rescue her beloved land: Substitutiary Locomotion, a spell that causes objects to take on lives of their own. Unfortunately, the book's page that contained the spell is missing. Eglantine meets Emelius, who is revealed to be a charlatan, and he joins her and Eglantine's unwillingly adopted children into retrieving the spell.
The spell is eventually ascertained and utilized, the Jerries are driven out of Pepperinge Eye. A changed man, Emelius decides to complete his redemption by joining the home guard's efforts in the Good War.
When Browne was dismissed from duty, he returned to his new home in Pepperinge Eye, to Eglantine.
Actor: Emelius Browne was played by David Tomlinson, whom is probably better known as Mr. Banks in "Mary Poppins"
Mr. Browne supported Eglantine Price with a flair in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971)
