Bruce Boxleitner attended the D23 Expo on Saturday, August 20 to sign autographs for Tron nerds, such as myself. Yes, I met Tron, and he's a really nice and chill dude!
I, however, was not present when Boxleitner had a conversation with a fan who recorded their meeting on camera. What did they talk about, you ask? The rumored sequel to Tron: Legacy (2010), which itself is a sequel to Tron (1982). According to Boxleitner, who plays Tron in all installments, Tron 3 is a "done deal."
Fan: "So, how was it to see Tron back on the screen after so long?"
Boxleitner: "It was excellent! Are you kidding? And a huge surprise when I got the call, for sure."
Fan: "If they were to call you for a third one, would you..."
Boxleitner: "Oh, it's already a done deal! It's already in the works, my friend. It's already in the works."
Fan: "About how long do you think it'll take?"
Boxleitner: "2013, I think. It takes a long time to make these things, and we won't get to it until next year, anyway."

This isn't too surprising. Disney hired screenwriter David DiGilio (Eight Below) to write a script for a third Tron, even months before Legacy was released. Also, Tron: Legacy's home video release contained Easter eggs that hinted to what could be seen the third movie. Finally, Legacy earned $400,062,763 worldwide, on a budget of $170 million. The numbers aren't as much as Disney wanted to see, but the movie was profitable nevertheless. To top it all off, the animated 10-part series Tron: Uprising is going to premiere next year, which will help to prevent interest in the franchise from waning. All signs point to, yes, Tron 3 is definitely likely to happen, and if Bruce Boxleitner says it is, I believe him.
I do, however, think that 2013 is too early for a movie with such heavy use of special effects to be released, especially if it starts filming sometime next year. But, hey, I could be wrong!
End of line.
