Real Name: George Darling
Alias: Scarlet Gem
Age: 37
Species: Human
Sex: Male
Nationality: British
Alignment: Good
Affiliated With:
Status:
Physical Description:
George Darling is of average height and obese. Though actually brown, Mr. Darling's thick hair is dark enough to appear black to the casual observer. He wears it in the proper style for men of his age and station, though he always sports a mustache and, if it will follow the cut, sideburns. His eyes are dark green.
Appearance (Dream League):
Scarlet Gem wears an enormous scarlet sash that passes from his left shoulder to his hip and is able to wrap twist around his waist. Cut from the fabric, or perhaps cut from ends unseen of the sash, is his bandanna and separate ruffles, one worn at each wrist and ankle. He generally wears a black outfit under this with a white undershirt. (References: Charles II and Captain Kidd.) Very often, Scarlet Gem will include gold, silver and jewel baubles on his person but these things are "far too precious to be left unburied" at all times.
Appearance (Outside of Costume):
Mr. Darling must always remember that he is not merely keeping up with the Joneses, he is an envied neighbor always a step ahead of the normal crowd. He holds the hope that maybe eventually he will be THE neighbor with a distinct name all his own. His appearance then must always reflect this.
His appearance then must always be impeccable, grand in the eyes of society. Daily business? The strictest business attire, no less. Not a wrinkle, not a thread out of place, and not a hint of dust anywhere. Out for a casual stroll with his family? Well, a lark is a lark and with children as young as he has, Mr. Darling expects the unexpected. He wears nothing that would be worth lamenting on his budget should it gain a stain (or misplaced thread!), but he is most careful that his neighbors are not aware that he worries about such things as a budget. One should always look their station, and above if it all possible! It can be said then that Mr. Darling tends to stick to the classic designs, for the classic ones are both tasteful and grand but easily found in more frugal price ranges.
Abilities and Powers:
Scarlet Gem's sash is 100% Neverlandian. Everything about it was grown in Neverland, it was produced and nurtured in Neverland, and it found itself ingrained with pixie dust while in Neverland.
Whether from the pixie dust itself or pure will, Scarlet Gem is able to achieve something similar to childlike mindset (usually), giving him the bravado that allows him to go and do with little reservation or forethought. While Scarlet Gem's set physical appearance does not change, he gains a child's natural acrobatic abilities and apparent immunity to certain physical ailments. And, of course, pixie dust comes with the ability to fly.
The sash itself seems to have had a strange tendency to absorb and mimic that which is around it. This is not an instantaneous thing, but rather a 'nurtured' one. At its start, it listened to the desires and dreams of an infamous captain, and apparently determined in itself to become the ideal accessory to its great master, carefully developing its abilities before being given over to its current owner. It is the perfect flotation device. When placed over eyes, it offers a view as if from a powerful telescope. When pulled over ears, one may never hear the tick-tocking of any clock (or anything else for that matter). Above all, its horrible taste insures it to be a great repellent for any and all crocodiles (or anything with tastebuds) attempting to eat its wearer.
But then it was given over to this Jimmy kid, who swiftly abandoned ship, returned home, and left the sash to a fate of being the wrap around a sword, stored inside a crate box. It had more than enough time to become acquainted with the feel of the sword and sawdust, mesh the useful residue of pixie dust and human hair into its fabric and understand the hope that was offered by the rays of light that entered from the outside world. The sash is able to create lighted sawdust. The light is to varying degrees of intensity. The sawdust varies in size from a grain of sand to about half an inch, but is almost always numerous, the mini parts coming together to make another sword image. When Scarlet Gem first realized this ability, the sash was covered in many tiny, dimly lit swords that shattered into hundreds of dust particles and disappeared when he disturbed them. He immediately called this ability 'Sword Dust.' Given it was *his* hair meshed into the sash's fabric, Scarlet Gem has the ability to... most of the time... control the Sword Dust.
Weaknesses:
Pixie dust is best used by a believer holding childlike faith. Scarlet Gem is undeniably an adult, and as such has the occasional fall in thought as he thinks his antics are impossible posh! thoroughly unbelievable. At these times, childlike acrobatics and flight become intermittent utter foolish nonsense!.
Then there are times that the sash itself, usually a perfectly good inanimate object, decides not to be inanimate. Supposedly, it has a telepathic link to its wearer (or perhaps only Scarlet Gem, it has never been tested). It may decide to offerdemands suggestions at times, especially to up the odds or make pirate-like demands. While it has every desire to be kept out of a crate, it can demand that these pirate-hoops be jumped before it performs well. Or fail all together should its feelings have been hurt somehow. Uh. Or it may be Scarlet Gem blaming something else for his shortcomings and less than golden tendencies. Or something. Anyway, less commonly and less harmful than the pixie dust, the sash's abilities can also weaken or fail.
Scarlet Gem can't steer a ship, hoist its flags, or swab its desks. If you ask him to go to the stern, he would probably only straighten his back and offer a fierce look. He likely doesn't even know what it's like to spend a day without touching land. However, he HAS willingly taken on a pirate-theme, with a pirate-reared sash offering his abilities. As the pixie dust reminds him to look back to childhood, the sash insures that he doesn't remain entirely scrupulous. Most notably, he has a weakness for shining items and very well may pilfer spend much time gawking over such items pilferpilferpilfer!.
Accessories:
OOC note: I am assuming this means accessories he can use as a Superhero in a normal fight?
** A Pop-Gun, modified from a real gun and using the laws of physics to spit out corks, or whatever fits, at intended targets. Scarlet Gem is a rather good shot.
** A middle-sized sword. Also gifted from Captain Hook, bigger than the dagger used by Peter Pan, but shorter than anything a true swordsman would use. Scarlet Gem took fencing lessons as a boy, but is possibly more dangerous to himself and his allies than an enemy when he's trying to use it as a sword and not as a large knife.
Character Information (Personality & Motivation):
George Darling is sometimes primarily a family man and sometimes primarily a business banker. He is very conscious of society, societal rules, and what those in charge consider to be fashionable and acceptable. He is very careful to keep the best of appearances in front of his peers. He's a very practical, common sense sort of individual who is always looking forward. Sometimes he looks a little too forward and forgets that there are pieces that must come between Point A and Point B, but he always means well. Mr. Darling may become stressed at times and may forget to consider circumstances in their entirety, but he has a kind heart that is indeed empathetic with those around him once he takes a moment to stop and consider.
Thinking empathetically, Mr. Darling drudged up some long forgotten memories of his own venture to Neverland as a young boy. To share such adventures and bonding experiences with his children was why he pulled out the old, scarlet sash in the first place. Thinking practically, if Peter Pan was indeed visiting the room of his dearest children, there was a distinct possibility of a great danger. There were other vigilantes out there. Couldn't he become one as well?
The whisper from the sash and affect of the pixie dust answered loud and clear. Of course he could! Already confident with a tendency toward bluster, carefree childhood leaned belief into pride. Lessons from watching his own children, and the joy he had in them already, lifted his childlike ability to glee and glory in a moment. He is a hero-in-training, but surely will be a success! Experience upon experience will continue to aid Scarlet Gem into creating the proper superhero persona.
