The Lion King is still in theaters. The 3D-converted release of the film premiered at the 2011 D23 Expo, which I attended. It was supposed to be in a widespread theatrical release for only two weeks, but apparently it was a bigger success than Disney expected, because the movie will get an extended run. Now, Disney has announced that more animated films, both classic and Pixar, are getting the 3D converted treatment. - Beauty and the Beast – January 13, 2012
- Disney-Pixar's Finding Nemo – September 14, 2012
- Disney-Pixar's Monsters, Inc. – January 18, 2013 (Monsters University, a prequel to the original film, arrives in theaters in Disney Digital 3D on June 21, 2013)
- The Little Mermaid – September 13, 2013.
Some of you may wonder, "What the hell does a 3D conversion of a 2D movie look like?" Well, the truth is... it's kinda hard to describe. First of all, it's layered, so it looks like a multiplane effect that reaches out from the screen. Also, in The Lion King 3D, body parts of characters have a noticeable protrusion towards the viewer. For example, Mufasa's snout appears closer to you than his eyes. As I said, I have watched The Lion King 3D. Was it an interesting experiment? Sure. Was it really necessary? No. But, hey, it's cool to see Disney movies re-released in theaters, like in the good old days! Source: movies.ign.com/articles/119/1198213p1.html

Maybe this'll all serve to get more pple interested in 2D animation again and get theatrical animation to move back in that direction, but I won't hold my breath. Personally though, I wouldn't spend money to see films I already own (and certainly not in 3D), but that's just how I rolls. I don't fault others for doing so.

Home video is dandy, but nothing beats watching an animated classic on the theater screen. <3

*Crosses fingers* Come on Hunchback of Notre Dame! I don't really care about the 3D part; I'd just love to see it on the big screen.

Now you see the advantage of being old. I have seen every single Disney animated feature in the theater.
Except Cars 2. I elected not to see that one.
But all the regular, hand-drawn. Yep. Saw 'em.
Not necessarily the first run. I'm not that old.

Not necessarily the first run. I'm not that old. This is true, lol. I haven't seen every single animated feature that was put out, but I've seen several. And a few live-action ones like Hocus Pocus... but come to think of it, that might be the only live-action Disney film I've seen at the theater. I own more of their movies on VHS.

VHS? Now that's old. Just kidding. When I was a kid, my mom took us to nearly every Disney movie, so I saw all the live-actions of the 70's on the big screen.

Why can't I find a Betamax machine anywhere?! Beta tapes are still made, right? Right?

LOL.
I had to wait until the 70's live-action movies aired on TV to see them, so it must've been awesome to actually watch them on the big screen.

Well said, L! I also skipped Cars 2. I did see Cars 2, but only for the Toy Story short. It was actually a lot better than the first Cars movie!

I wasn't even a gleam in my father's testicle in the 70's.

Hot dang, L! That's an achievement to be proud of, for sure. ;D I'm jealous!
Good to hear Lion King's getting an extended run! It's my favorite Disney film of all time and a very special movie to me for a number of reasons, one of which is that it was the first film I ever saw in theaters - seeing it on the big screen once again, nearly 17 years later, was really something special.
Looking forward to Beauty and the Beast! <3

My favorite Disney movies are the not-so-popular and beloved ones. lol. There's no way in hell we'll ever see a theatrical re-release of Alice in Wonderland anymore, or especially The Sword in the Stone.

Sword in the Stone is treated by disney like a leper. At least Alice has a cult following.
I sympathize, because my fave is the oft-overlooked Great Mouse Detective.
The advantage of having a less-popular favourite: there are so few collectibles that it just might be possible to own everything. Try doing that with Lion King.

LOL, that's sad but true. All of those movies deserve more love. It's the same thing with Fox And The Hound and Treasure Planet. I'm kinda of the mind that because those movies didn't pull in the big bucks it's why they're treated like Disney's redheaded stepchildren.
Trying to collect every piece of TLK merchandise ever created would be a life-long endeavor.

Ah, Treasure Planet, now there's an underappreciated gem. You could probably count the merchandise on one hand.

I have but one thing to say to this. "If they don't make Fantasia 3D, I'LL HUNT THEM DOWN AND GUT THEM LIKE A FISH!!!!"
NOTE: This comment is not a real threat. Just a refrence to The Grinch.
