The sun rose peacefully over St. Canard, signalling the start of a new day. But, unknown to the innocent citizens of that great city, the peace of dawn was about to be horribly shattered.
Well, maybe not dawn, exactly. More like nine-thirty-ish, the skies were rent by the harsh rumble of engines. It was the Ice Pirate and his fearsome crew of cutthroats, making their first attack on St. Canard. Sure, dawn would've been a better time for an air strike, but Don Karnage liked to sleep in.
He'd grown tired of Cape Suzette and their cursed anti-pirate guns. Compared to that, the twin cities looked like easy pickings. And besides, Karnage and company now had super-powers in addition to their weapons.
And so, about nine-thirty, give or take, a small squadron of one-man planes thundered over St. Canard, daring anyone to stop them.
********
No one did. Or even tried. "Ha!" laughed the pirate captain aloud. "The peoples of this puny city are frightened of my oh-so-scary reputation! Not to mention my very-much bulging muscles."
The lack of resistance emboldened Karnage. He signalled his pirate horde to land right in the street, chuckling at the inconvenience it caused to local traffic.
"Now," continued the Scourge of the Skies, eying the wares in a jewelry store window, "we will help ourselves to these pretty baubles."

Aurora finally woke up, after a dozen dreams. She had slipped in and out of different sleeping stages over the course of the night. She had returned to her room in the Overlook after a long and trying day, and she wanted nothing more than to sleep her fatigue away. Thankfully, she went to bed very early the previous night (she didn't even stay up much beyond dinner), and woke up at about nine-thirty in the morning. Even with uncharacteristically unkempt hair, groggy eyes, and slower reflexes, Aurora still looked beautiful even when she looked 'bad' in the morning. She was dressed in a pink, silky pair of pajamas. The top was strapped and was mid-cut, so the top of her cleavage was visible. Barefoot, the waked beauty yawned again and entered the shower in her room. She probably should have woken up a few hours earlier (the Balloonist was known to wake up with the sun), but she was just so tired. And, of course, she was a heavy sleeper. Nevertheless, the morning shower always helped liven up the superhuman. She sang pitch-perfect soprano as she cleaned herself for another day. After bathing, she brushed her teeth, washed her mouth, and flossed. Flossing was not a common invention in Eyvindria, but it should have been. Ever since she discovered flossing and its health benefits, she made sure to floss each and every single day, without fail. She finished her rounds of dental hygiene and smiled at the mirror. Funnily, she would repeat the same process after eating breakfast. Satisfied with her remarkably pearly teeth, she slipped into her costume (freshly cleaned since the previous night), Sunshine examined herself in the mirror. She was in costume, she was clean, she looked fresh and ready to save the world for the thousandth time. What was she missing? "Oh, I am such a fool!" She took her eyemask, pressed it on, and giggled at her reflection. Just a single, modest spray of perfume was all she had left. She decided to give perfume a try ever since she met Powermouse. Maybe it could help Sunshine with her problem... of finding a man. No! No time to think about that. Ready, she stepped out of her room and marched for the kitchen, her heeled boots clicking rhythmically on the floorboards. Unfortunately, breakfast would have to wait. On her way to the kitchen, she heard the living room's large, high-definition television (Duck Avenger's favorite 'gadget' in the Overlook) turned on, and set on a local news channel. Sunshine turned and looked at the television when a duo of news reporters had breaking news, and it wasn't good. "Breaking news this hour! Air Pirates have invaded St. Canard. Local resident describes the invasion as, 'a mild inconvenience.' Traffic in St. Canard has been delayed indefinitely, while the pirates are looting. Local officers claim they'd like to know the pirate leader's demands, if he could enunciate."Sunshine, who was playful and loose while getting ready for the day, hardened her face in determination. She was needed. After nodding, the Ray of Hope ran outside without another word, and boldly flew into the air... *** Sunshine was embarrassed to stop and ask an average citizen where exactly St. Canard was. After being told the general direction, she flew and, sure enough, found it. Calisota was not one of the nation's biggest states in terms of size, but it was filled with cities and metropolises. None of them were as big as Epcot City, of course, but St. Canard was unique in its own right. This was the first time Sunshine ever visited St. Canard, and it was pretty. But she was not here to see the sights! She had to put a stop to air pirates. She didn't wish to trouble the other Dream League, but she would call for their assistance if needed. Still, Sunshine was confident she could manage by herself... for now. In her flight around St. Canard, she noticed a group of obvious thugs robbing a jewelery store. She landed, entered the store, folded her arms on her chest, and cleared her throat loudly yet politely, so that the thieves could hear her. "I hope you're going to buy those jewels. Because stealing is breaking the law. And I punish all who break the law." It was as polite as speaking softly and carrying a big stick could get.

"Diamonds! Rubies! Those orange-colored jewels I forget what they are called..." It was a magnificent haul, and the air pirates were soon festooned with glittering gems while the store clerks looked helplessly on.
"Arrivederci, oh, helpless clerk-type persons," cholrtled Don Karnage, turning toward the exit, only to find it blocked by a golden-haired female.
Startled, the pirate minions just looked at one another for a moment, then at their leader, waiting for instructions.
Karnage eyed the newcomer critically before replying. "Buy? Buy? Ha! And again, I say, "Ha!" We are pirates. We do not 'buy' anything!"
With that explanation which even a little baby child could understand, Karnage signalled to his men and attempted to brush past the foolish girl. He had more stores to rob and no time for this.

Sunshine was remarkably polite when she addressed the thieves. Other than her threat of punishment, her tone didn't instigate; it was more of polite reminder from a considerate woman. But as it turned out, Sunshine knew that polite manners wouldn't stop these thieves. The teenager's face tightened noticeably after the apparent leader's ill-mannered response. As chance would have it, Sunshine despised rudeness.
When the anthropomorphic pirate with the strong accent tried to brush past her, Sunshine was fast to grab hold of his arm. To say that the human girl was much stronger than she looked was a gross understatement. She refused to let go as she addressed the wolf a second time, her voice less polite than before.
"What you're doing is wrong," she said, her eyes serious. "If you continue this, I'm going to have to hurt you. Please, don't do this! This is your last chance."
Her grip on the leader was very tight, but definitely not as tight as she could have been.

Karnage's exit from the store was stopped in mid-swagger by a dainty hand on his arm. Now, he knew that many women longed to touch the person of Don Karnage, but not many had such a strong grip.
It did not make Karnage happy.
Pulling his arm from her grasp with some difficulty, the pirate lost any teeny-tiny shred of patience he may have possessed. "You? Hurt me?" He might have thought this remark funny. Might have, but didn't. "Okay, little girly-girl, this is the last and final straw. You are about to go down in history as the very first-ever victim of the awesomely wonderful powers of--Ice Pirate!"
So saying, Don Karnage tossed aside the baubles to free his right hand, and, as his skin and fur turned a brilliant blue, he pointed his claws at the girl, shooting forth a shower of ice intended to coat her from head to toe.
"How do you like this chilly reception, eh?" Glancing back at his crew to make sure they appreciated the humor, he added, "I am one clever guy, yes-no?"

Sunshine had thought that subduing this arrogant, rude leader would be easy. After all, he seemed like just another thief with an absurdly inflated ego. But she was in for a surprise after her enemy introduced himself as Ice Pirate. She silently watched his fur and skin change drastically before her very eyes. His entire body had changed to a remarkable blue, and realization crossed her face when she saw his claws pointed at her. Ice shot from his claws like magic. As soon as she saw the attack, Sunshine attempted to fly out of the way, but she didn't quite succeed; her feet were coated in a heavy block of ice, and she dropped to the floor, standing upright. The rest of her body was fine, but her iced feet planted her on the floor.
Sunshine grunted as she tried to smash the ice that covered her booted feet with her hands, but the ice was very cold to the touch, and was anything but flaccid. Sunshine knew that her Sunray ability would be her best weapon against Ice Pirate, but there was a major problem: she hadn't absorbed enough heat from the sun on her way here. She felt she could muster a little amount, but not enough to critically damage Ice Pirate, let alone melt all of the ice that trapped her.
Sunshine grunted again as she struggled to break the ice to pieces, and she glanced at the Pirate with sour expression. "No."
She was beginning to regret not notifying the other Dream League about this supposed easy mission.

The freeze power worked splendidly, as Don Karnage never doubted. "Very nice," he complimented himself, bending to scoop up the jewelry he'd dropped. "Now, my ferocious pirate hoard, destroy this very inconvenient person!"
The pirate captain continued out the door, stopping only to view himself in the store window. It would take a minute or two for his natural color to return, but that was all right. At first, the blue coloring had upset Karnage, but then he decided he was every bit as handsome in blue. Plus, it added to the aura of terror he projected to the weak and helpless.
Slipping a few rings on his fingers, Ice Pirate didn't even turn to watch as his minions prepared to carry out his orders. Each one had been granted his own super-power by that mysterious meteor, and one fellow, a lanky dog-faced pirate, stepped forward, pointing his glowing hand at the prisoner.

It was just Sunshine's luck that another Dreamer happened to be in the vicinity just then. Doctor Delbert Doppler was in St. Canard, driving a new Dreamer vehicle dubbed The Comet.
It had only been a few weeks since he had officially joined the Dream League, and Delbert was eager to make a good impression on everyone, including and especially his teammates. After all, they had helped him so much: now he was more or less off limits to those horrible governments agents who had been constantly chasing him before.
The Comet's radio abruptly interrupted his thoughts as it blurted out that a jewelry store robbery was in progress in the city's shopping district. Delbert perked up with interest at the news. He hadn't technically been a hero for long, but still, here was a chance to show everyone that he could use his abilities for good, not just destruction!
It didn't take him long to find the store in question. Parking the Comet further down the street, he stepped out and stealthily approached the jewelry store. From where he was, he could see through the large glass windows on the front of the building, and gasped in shock at what he saw.
Delbert recognized the lovely figure with the long golden hair and distinct pink and blue costume as Sunshine. There was something wrong here. She was being menaced by several very unscrupulous-looking fellows who seemed to be dressed like... pirates ('Now that's interesting,' he thought )... but she wasn't trying to fly or use her other powers. The reason for that was that her feet seemed to be frozen in a large block of ice.
"Oh dear! Hang on Sunshine, I'm coming!" He exclaimed. A wolfish-looking anthro was coming out. Delbert planted himself right in his path.
"Stop, ruffian!" The gawky canine-like alien shouted in the mos authoritative voice he could muster, holding a hand out. "Have your men desist at once!" In his cream dress shirt and tan slacks, he hardly looked threatening.

Don Karnage swaggered to his waiting tri-plane, which he had left with the motor running. But his progress was impeded by an unprepossessing figure: skinny, slightly stooped and bookish in appearance.
The pirate did stop, but hardly from fear or intimidation.
His eyebrows shot up at the command. It was almost funny, coming from such a milksop. Almost, but not quite.
"Did my ears just hear you, a pathetic little scrawny librarian-type person telling me, a ferocious air pirate and spiffy dresser, to stop?"
First a dainty little teen-age girl, and now this. It was getting so a self-respecting villain couldn't commit a robbery in peace any more.
"Listen to me, my not-friend," Karnage's voice dropped to a menacing growl, "You may be a smarty-pants schoolteacher, but you do not know who you are dealing with."
And that fact just made him all the angrier; everyone must know the name of Don Karnage.
The wolfish villain couldn't decide how to dispatch this pest. He'd already used his powers once today, so perhaps his sword...although this annoyance looked like someone he could snap in two with his bare hands.
Nope, it would definitely be the sword.
"Prepare to face the flashing blade of Don Karnage!"
Karnage reached for his weapon, then realized his hands were still filled with jewelry. "Hold on one second..." Dumping the booty into various pockets, the pirate captain dusted off his palms before finally drawing his cutlass.
"Ah, much better. Now, then, shall we commence with the screaming?"

"Did my ears just hear you, a pathetic little scrawny librarian-type person telling me, a ferocious air pirate and spiffy dresser, to stop?"
Librarian type? Delbert frowned. The insult annoyed him, but it wasn't enough to fuel his powers. Hopefully if things came down to fisticuffs, this pirate would give him more to work with.
Clearing his throat, he began, "Actually, I happen to be a noted astro -"
The villain didn't give him time to complete his sentence. Hmph, more insults. In addition to being a thief, this person was really quite rude.
"I'm afraid I don't exactly know who you are, but you happen to be dealing with a member of the Dream League -- Savage!" Delbert declared, striking what he believed was a heroic pose, his hands on his hips, a stern expression on his ace, and his chest puffed out. He didn't quite know how all this superhero stuff worked, but thought that sounded like a good start. "Now, will you free my comrade, or will I have to hurt you?"
Prior to coming to Earth, Delbert would have never done anything like this. He had spent all of his life avoiding fights, not jumping into them. But considering that he could now turn into a 7'0'' beast that could pick up a city bus, he really didn't do much running from bully types anymore. Truth be told, a part of him actually enjoyed having such powers, but he didn't quite know if that was that his own personality or his alter ego.
Now a cutlass made its debut. Delbert's pulse quickened, and he took a step back. He felt a slight buzzing in the back of his mind that he had come to associate with his powers activating.
"I suppose we shall." He said, glaring at his adversary. "But it won't be me doing the screaming," he thought.

"You dare to call me a savage?" Bad enough the newcomer didn't know who he was, but insults? Well, he would give the pathetic fool reason to remember the name of Don Karnage. Except that he would be dead, and then not remember anything.
"You know, I was going to kill you fast and speedy, but now, I think I will take my time."
With that, the pirate slashed at his victim, a mighty blow that would have cut Doppler in two, had Karnage not deliberately pulled his swing, thereby only slicing partway through his sleeve and, if all went as planned, through half his arm as well.
A fiendish grin spread across Don Karnage's wolfish face. He was going to enjoy this.

Sunshine continued to try and lift herself off of the floor. Flying wasn't doing her any good, so she tried to use every muscle in her legs to wedge out of the ice. The ice was terribly adhesive; her boots were stuck to the floor, and even though Sunshine was excessively strong, the ice created by the arrogant pirate was likewise superpowered. It was incredibly durable.
Sunshine looked up and beyond the pirate captain's minions: she caught a glimpse of Dr. Delbert Doppler outside, with Ice Pirate. "Savage!" she said in almost a whisper. She felt relieved because she knew that the boorish captain's ego and insults would do much more than try Doppler's patience. The doctor was guaranteed to transform. And so she was confident that Savage could handle himself until she could get to him.
But, first, she had to take care of the lackeys, one of whom pointed a glowing hand to her, presumably preparing to kill her. The Ray of Hope inwardly scolded herself for not thinking of it sooner, but she realized that, although her boots were frozen to the floor, her skin wasn't. She tried to lift the whole block of ice above the floor, but she discovered that she could slip out of her boots provided that she relax her feet and pull them out of her footwear. With grace and speed, she leaped out of her boots and kicked the dog-faced lackey with her bare right foot. She landed on the floor after the kick, and she stood in a prepared stance, ready to physically battle with remaining lackeys. She would have to fight with bare feet, but she didn't mind. Her face was determined, but her mind was softer.
Savage, please be safe! I'll be there as soon as I can.
She knew that Savage couldn't hear her thoughts, because Dreamchild wasn't present to direct such messages. She waited for one of the lackeys to strike first.

"What? No! You misunderstand me, Savage is my pseudonym --" Delbert tried to explain, but the villain didn't seem to be in the mood to listen.
He let out a cry that was a combination of surprise as well as pain as Karnage struck out at him with his cutlass. Loosing his footing, Delbert fell to the pavement, landing on his backside. His reflexes saved his life, as he only wound up with a nasty gash on his forearm. If he hadn't jumped back in time he would've been minus an arm. He still didn't quite know how his powers worked. Savage may have been able to withstand a lot of physical damage, but he didn't want to see if he could regenerate an arm. or not
That attack pretty much did it. The combination of adrenaline, pain, and anger gave way to full-blown rage. The world suddenly seemed to swim and distort before his eyes. As his body changed, his bones snapped and contorted, his muscles filled out and thickened, causing his shirt to rip apart.
Transforming was never a fun experience for Delbert, but fortunately it didn't take long. Now, in place of where the gangly doctor had been was a being that called to mind popular images of werewolves. Already the cut he had sustained was healing over. Letting out a feral snarl, the creature arose to his full height, fixing his baleful yellow gaze on Karnage. Puny Doppler, wasting time talking when he could've been fighting, as usual.
In a voice that was far deeper and rougher-sounding then it had been before (as well as lacking Doppler's more refined inflection), Savage sardonically remarked, "Care to try that again?"

"Ha, ha!" laughed the air pirate with disdain. "One teensy gash on the arm, and the big bad bookworm falls on his sit-down place!" This was going to be far too easy.
Karnage stole a glance at himself in the shop window. What a dashing figure he cut! It ought to be captured for posterity.
His glittering eyes darted back to his prey. "Why for is your shirt ripping like that?" he asked, the grin frozen on his face looking somewhat less mirthful than previously.
Impossible as it seemed, the puny scientist was changing before his eyes into something bigger, something hairier, and distinctively dangerous-looking. "Sacramento california!" Karnage swore under his breath. "The big bad bookworm has turned into the big bad wolf-monster!"
Taking two giant steps backward, the pirate captain shouted for his henchmen. "To me, my crew! Fast and speedy! Forget the girl and get out here!" That last was almost a screech as Don Karnage raised his empty hand. No more playing around, he would use his powers on this creature.
But instead of freezing his foe, this time the Ice Pirate launched a barrage of icicles, each as sharp as a dagger.
Meanwhile, inside the store, Piledriver was down from a kick in the face, while his companions prepared to attack the costumed hero. One pirate stretched his arms like rubber bands, wrapping them around the blonde heroine, while another popped spikes out all over his body and arms, the better to hit her with.
They heard the command of their leader, and each one hesitated for a second or so, slightly confused.

Sunshine risked a second of her time to look through to the store's large window, after hearing Ice Pirate's command. She could see Delbert was transforming into the stronger and formidable Savage. This was a double-edged sword; Savage was strong and could definitely hold his own in a fight with that arrogant pirate, but he also needed to be accompanied and supervised to avoid excessive collateral damage.
Sunshine still had a rubbery goon and a spiked thug to deal with, but they should be no problem to her. The rubbery pirate grabbing hold of her was actually exactly what she wanted. When the two lackeys hesitated after hearing the captain's command, Sunshine rose a foot in the air and began to spin like a top. She used her weight in the air to increase her speed, so with each spin she turned faster and faster, to the point where her features and costume became a nondescript blur of blue and pink. She intended to launch the rubbery pirate that held onto her to fling off from the intense spinning.

Acting on instinct, Savage raised his arms in front of his face. While the razor-sharp icicles would have certainly badly injured a normal individual, Savage’s hide was much tougher than normal, and the ice shards shattered upon impact. While he did feel stinging pain from the assault, it only served to make him madder.
Lowering his arms, the behemoth let out a feral growl before looking around and grabbing the nearest object he could get his hands on – a large tree. Ripping the tree out of the ground, he swung it at Karnage like a club, intending to crush him with it.

Sunshine's spin neatly turned the tables on the stretchy thug. He tried to maintain his hold, but the centrifugal force flung Armstrong right into one of his fellow pirates, and they two went down in a tangled heap.
The pair left standing glanced at each other. This girl was tougher than she looked. As one man, they decided it was time to see if their captain needed any help, dashing from the shop into the street, just in time to see a slew of icicles bouncing off some big monster like snowflakes.
"Where are the others?" screeched Don Karnage, jumping back a giant step as a massive tree whistled within inches of his pretty face.
"Never mind! Get him, men, get the hairy beast!"
The first pirate gestured with his arms, summoning a sudden wind storm to buffet the creature. It wasn't a hurricaine or anything, but it might keep him busy for a while.
Ice Pirate glared at his other henchman, who so far just stood there.
"Well? What are you waiting for? Attack him! Use your super power!"
"Okay, Cap'n. But...all I have is gender-switching power."
Karnage watched the pirate turn into a woman before his eyes.
"That's it?"
"Kinda, yeah."
Ice Pirate wanted to slap his own forehead in exasperation, but settled for slapping his minion instead.
"Enough! We go! Back to the Iron Vulture!" Suiting action to words, the wolfish villain sprang for his plane. There were far too many super-heroes in view for his taste.

Left alone, Sunshine slowed herself to a stop and opened her eyes. She had no time to reclaim her footwear. She flew out of the shop's door and rose in the air. Her sunray power could be handy against Ice Pirate, and in order to use that ability she needed to be under direct sunlight. While spending a few moments charging like a battery, she watched Savage swing a whole tree like a club. He truly was a hulking beast. Thankfully, he was on the Dream League's side... mostly.
The Ray of Hope dove straight for Ice Pirate when he raced for his aircraft. She felt harbored a little power in herself, and she decided to use it. She stopped herself before him and shot a small beam of heat straight for Ice Pirate.
"I am empowered by the sun. And the sun melts ice!" And Savage could do more than break ice, she thought.

The nameless pirate continued to hold off Savage as best he could, swirling old newspapers, leaves, and other debris around the creature with his wind powers. He couldn't even blow a man over with his efforts, but maybe he could hamper this man-beast long enough for the villains to escape.
The girl was outside now, and coming fast. And she could fly, too, blast it.
Ice Pirate threw up a quick wall of ice, cringeing a little when he saw how fast it was melting from that sunbeam. Two of his minions, Spike and Armstrong, were just staggering out of the jewelry store after disentangling themselves; of Piledriver, there was still no sign.
Spike ran for the blonde, swinging his spiked arms at her back, but the rubbery pirate chose the better part of valor and made for his own plane, just as his leader did the same.
Vaulting into his own cockpit, Don Karnage started the engine racing as swiftly as humanly possible. "Hold them off for a few more minutes, my pirate horde!"
Just as the ice wall melted completely away, one of the pirates, Ox by name, stepped in front of Sunshine. "You wouldn't hit a girl, would you?" she whined, for indeed, the pirate was now clearly female.
"Nice work, Ox," complimented his captain. "But I think we will have to be changing your name."

Savage found himself being waylaid by one pirate who was using his wind controlling powers to blast him with high-powered winds. The winds weren't strong enough to knock him off his feet, but it was still distracting. Who did this puny dog think he was, getting in his way of smashing that annoying pirate leader? Adjusting his footing so he could gain better traction on the ground, Savage hurled the tree at the aerokinetic, roaring "STUPID DOG!" as he did. He was too infuriated to notice that Sunshine had made it out of the store. Not bothering to see whether or not his tree hit its' mark or if luck was on the pirate's side, Savage turned to look for Karnage. He spotted the wolf running for his plane.
"COME BACK HERE SO I CAN SMASH YOU!" He thundered after Karnage, intent on making good on his word.

"Oh, yes, I think I will be stupid enough to do that today..." muttered Karnage to himself as he snapped on his goggles and began to taxi down the road. The little tri-plane didn't require much runway, which was why it was a favorite with the air pirate; even so, it was going to be tight with that hairy beast in the way.
"Icicles do not stop you," he soliloquized, "But what about...bullets, I wonder?" With an evil leer, the frozen fiend seized the automatic gun mounted on his engine cowling and let loose a barrage at the furry roadblock.

The wall of ice blocked the sunray from hitting Ice Pirate. But she didn't have time to think, because she felt a spiked club against her back. She groaned and was almost knocked to the ground, but she regained herself and flew up again. She looked and saw that the pirate Spike was responsible. Thankfully, the spikes didn't penetrate Sunshine, but she was still deeply vexed. She aimed her palm and shot a small sunbeam at him. After the attack, she landed and ran past the melted ice wall, and was greeted by a humorous-looking woman.
"Well, that depends," Sunshine said modestly, after hearing Ice Pirate's compliment. "If you hit me first, I will have to deal with you with force."
Sunshine decided that there was no point talking to the woman. Her primary focus was Ice Pirate. She watched Ice Pirate's tri-plane take off, and gasped when the pirate captain ready the gun mounted on his plane. Sunshine dove into the air and flew in front of Savage, acting as a shield just as Ice Pirate fired. She didn't know if Savage's skin was bulletproof, but even if it was, better safe than sorry. Bullets struck Sunshine and then dropped to the ground. She grunted as the bullets jammed against her, then she turned her head to speak to the infuriated Savage.
"I'm here to help you!"

When Ice Pirate turned his machine gun his way, Savage was less than impressed, continuing to scowl darkly at his foe instead. People had attempted to shoot him before. They still hadn’t made the bullet that could seriously hurt him.
Before he could advance, Sunshine leaped in front of him. The bullets struck her instead, but didn’t elicit anything other than a grunt or two from the Ray of Hope. She kept on surprising him. Why protect him (even though he didn’t need it) when she could be stopping Ice Pirate instead? Wasn't it the hero's job to focus on getting on the bad guys at all costs?
While tearing Ice Pirate and his plane into tiny pieces and then smashing those pieces was still his main objective, Savage caught Sunshine's comment to him and managed to sufficiently calm down enough to gruffly reply, “That’s funny. Because I think puny Doppler was trying to help you.”
Without another word, the single-minded behemoth moved past Sunshine and started through the hail of bullets, towards the plane. His heavy footsteps slightly rattled the windows of the buildings he passed.

Don Karnage did not like the way bullets seemed to bounce off his foes with no effect. Did not like it at all.
Pulling back on the stick with all his might, he nudged the tri-plane higher, but would it be enough to clear the annoying do-gooders?
Normally, Karnage wouldn't mind ramming an enemy with an airplane; in fact, he would consider that a pleasant diversion on a dull afternoon. But he would rather not muck up his personal craft with a lot of blood and hair and things.
Ice Pirate still had one trick up his embroidered sleeve. One hand reached outside his fuselage, pointed toward the ground, and created a large patch of ice, slick enough, he hoped, to trip up the monster.
The flying girl would pose a different problem, but first things first.
Meanwhile, Spike, blasted by a strange beam, stood rubbing his eyes, temporarily blinded and thoroughly useless. Armstrong had succeeded in launching his plane and was making for the Iron Vulture. Ox was still trying to distract the heroes, crying, 'Oh, mercy me, I think I'm going to faint!' in his best damsel-in-distress tones.

Sunshine knew then that not only could Savage take care of himself and didn't require a shield, but he was so confident with himself that he responded with rudeness. Sunshine's feelings weren't easily hurt, but she couldn't help but feel a little stung by those words. Very well. If Savage was going to be safe, she wouldn't worry about him.
She decided to turn her aggression to the pirates. She took swift flight after the Ice Pirate's triplane. She shot another burst of Sunray at the Captain's plane. Because she was approaching directly from the front, she was ready for anything, from a game of chicken to somersaulting. He had to make the first move.

Savage was oblivious to Sunshine’s unhappiness at being brushed off by him in such a discourteous manner, irritated by how she had told him that she was there to help him. Out of all the Dream League members, to him she was probably the most tolerable one. Her jumping in front of him to take the literal bullet might’ve even impressed him the tiniest bit, even if it was totally unnecessary. But then she had to go and say something like that.
If it wasn’t people actively avoiding him like he was a supervillain, then it was people treating him like he was stupid. He wasn’t some fancy pants egghead like Doppler, but he had enough damn sense to recognize his own teammates. Did she think he was going to attack her too or something? Tch, sometimes he wondered why he even bothered with the League. How Doppler had wrangled him into joining he never knew.
‘You say that all the time. You bother with the League because you want to improve your public image and repay the League, correct?’ The was Doppler, talking to Savage in his mind. ‘Well, being rude to Sunshine doesn’t help any!’
‘Yeah yeah yeah…’ Savage replied, not in the mood for another lecture, then snidely added, ‘You’re still a geek.’
He looked around for more challengers to take out his frustrations on, and a certain blue-weaning pirate leader in particular. Some lady dressed as a pirate (Savage didn't think remember a woman being with them before) was standing around acting like she had come out of a cheap made for T.V. movie. Due to being somewhat distracted, he didn't notice the ice slick in his way until it was too late.
Savage could feel his feet sliding out from underneath him, and tried to catch his balance, but went sliding across the glistening icy surface. This was turning out to be one of the stupidest and embarrassing missions he had ever been on.

The handy little tri-plane lurched into the air, sailing easily over the now-prone Savage. Ice Pirate let out a triumphant guffaw at the sight of his new enemy sliding ungracefully on his furry backside.
"Yes, this is what you get when you tangle with Don Karnage!" he gloated, more to nourish his bloated ego than for any other reason.
Reluctantly, the dread pirate turned from the pleasant picture back to the task at hand. And not a moment too soon, for there was that little super-hero girl flying straight for him!
Karnage had seen what she could do, and he was none too sure which of them would survive a head-on collision. He pulled into a sweeping curve in an effort to avoid her, but not tight enough to avoid the beam that shot from her dainty fingers. A blast of heat enveloped the pirate captain, negating his ice powers and turning him back to his wolfish self.
But no matter, for a flick of his thumb shot forth another burst of machine-gun fire, not at Sunshine, but at Armstrong, severing the tail of his minion's craft. With a cry of dismay, the pirate thug fell from his disabled ship and began tumbling earthward.
Karnage, meanwhile, made a beeline for his mothership. Once on board the Iron Vulture, no one could hope to catch him. And if he knew these super-goody-two-shoes-types, the girl would be forced to abandon the chase to save even a pirate.

Sunshine inwardly sighed in relief when her blast of Sunray rendered the Ice Pirate's fur to its natural color. She could only hope this meant that he wouldn't be able to use his sub-zero powers. Unfortunately, he could still shoot his tri-plane's gun, and he aimed for his own henchman's plane. He successfully severed the tail of the henchman's plane, and said henchman fell out and plummeted for the ground.
That dog. He treated his henchmen as disposable numbers instead of actual living beings with souls and feelings. Ice Pirate truly was a despicable creature, and Sunshine hated this dilemma that was forced upon her. She could either go after the Captain, or risk losing him just to save a henchman's life.
She was already in trouble with Savage and possibly the Dream League as a whole, for going into this 'easy' mission alone, and being unable to solve it. And she feared that going for the lowly henchman instead of the Captain would enrage Savage even further than he already is. What could she do?
She winced and dove for Armstrong. Maybe if she caught him and left him for Savage, she could still reach for Ice Pirate in time. After catching the ill-treated henchman, she carried him to the ground as fast as she could, without losing her grip on him.
"I might be wrong to criticize you," she scolded Armstrong as she carried him, "but I think you should find a different leader."
When close enough to the ground, she released her grip, and flipped in the air to face the large aircraft, prepared to chase after it...

Armstrong was taken completely by surprise when his plane was shot down. He fell free of the descending fuselage, and before he could think, let alone act, the air pirate dropped into a pair of shapely but very powerful arms.
"Oh, yeah?" came the witty retort once he was deposited on terra firma. "Well, the cap'n knew I could turn myself into a parachute and save myself." Never mind that Armstrong didn't think of that little stunt until it was far too late.
"And, besides, we have a great health plan." With that, the pirate thug shot one of his rubbery arms around Sunshine's ankles and the other around a nearby lamppost, hoping to hold her back from pursuing his mates.
Karnage flew on without even bothering to glance at his fallen minion. "Ah, Armstrong, you really know how to take one for the team, yes-no? Perhaps you will make Pirate of the Month."
Ice Pirate's tri-plane buzzed into the waiting belly of the Iron Vulture, along with Ox, of all people, who had managed to get to his own plane and take off as well, since none of the heroes really paid that much attention to him.
The massive door swung shut on the impossibly armored aircraft, which then sailed away in search of greener pastures.

By this point, Savage had gotten clear of the ice patch and regained his footing. A low growl like distant thunder rumbled within Savage's throat as he watched Sunshine start to pursue the massive purple and steel-gray airship. A rather determined, almost smug grin overtook his face. He might not be able to fly like Sunshine could, but he had a way of getting around that. He just needed to get someplace that didn't have so many buildings around.
Just as he was preparing to search for such a location, the lycanthrope-like super watched as Ice Pirate shot down his own man. In retrospect, that wasn't really very surprising to see. Neither was Sunshine rescuing the pirate. As she tried to set him down, he used one of his rubbery arms to grab a hold of the blonde's leg and gripped his free hand around a lamppost, using it to anchor himself in place.
So Savage could either chase after Ice Pirate or assist Sunshine. Surely she didn't need his aid. He knew for a fact that dhe was nearly as strong as he was. And Ice Pirate was getting away... He hated himself sometimes. He rolled his eyes before making his way over to where Sunshine was grappling with the wayward pirate. Wrapping a hand around Armstrong's neck, he pulled the stretchy canine close and snarled in his face. "Let go, or I'm gonna turn you into a dog toy."
