BIRD ON THE TELEPHONE WIRE COME DOWN AND SING TO ME It'd been less than a week since Prince James had arrived back from his long trek across the country. With him, he'd brought a beautiful young bride, Snow White, who was the loveliest girl any person there had ever seen in their lives. The happy couple was married in what had to have been the grandest wedding ceremony in the kingdom's history. Young as James and Snow White were, they knew they loved each other, and that they'd do so for as long as they lived.
Now finally wed, it was announced that the boy and his new wife were to be made the new king and queen. With no doubt, the coronation ceremony was quite the important event! Tailors were called from all corners of the Germany to measure the royal couple, and to create their outfits. The cooks were working twice, even thrice, what they usually did to prepare a feast that would serve dozens of foreign royals and courtiers. Musicians, dancers, and performers were brought to serve as the entertainment. The clergy gathered together to discuss and prepare the religious aspects of the ceremony, such as what prayers and blessings were to be said. There was surely going to be little rest in the castle. After all, the coronation was less than a month away!
Snow White was somewhat, but understandably, nervous about it. She'd spent most of her life as a scullery maid under her wicked stepmother, Queen Grimhilde, and hadn't really been prepared for her future queen-hood. James, on the other hand, had spent his whole life being prepped for the throne he was to inherit. He seemed to have a way with making others feel better about themselves, and he had little trouble in helping to qualm his wife's fears, even if it were only the slightest bit. Still, he couldn't help but feel a bit jittery about the matter himself. Being only sixteen and fourteen years old respectively, the duty of having to govern an entire kingdom was quite a heavy weight on the couple's shoulders.
The princess was out in the spacious and extensive castle gardens, picking flowers and catching birds on her finger, talking to them all the while. Her husband was inside, as he'd more important matters to attend to. In his hands, he held several sheets of parchment, trying to memorize what would be his grand speech after the crowns were placed on his and Snow White's heads. As the boy walked down a corridor, he kept reciting the words to himself over and over again, letting them familiarize themselves in his mind. James passed by a window and saw his beloved outside and below, causing him to smile. She looked so beautiful, innocent, and carefree, all of which he was very glad to see. After all, Snow White didn't need the terrible memories of all her stepmother had done to her and the uncertainty of what lay ahead to trouble her. After watching his future queen for a few minutes, James continued on his way.
He'd no idea what was in store for him. The teenager kept walking nonchalantly down the corridor, his eyes practically glued to the parchment. Shortly thereafter, the light became seemingly dimmer. James found it hard to read any further, and a cool breeze brought a chill to his skin. He looked up and saw that he was no longer in the castle. Why, he wasn't even in Germany for that matter! It was a forest somewhere, the trees a bit different from the ones he'd always seen in the Black Forest. All was eerily silent, giving the impression that there wasn't another living soul around there aside from himself. The prince unconsciously dropped the parchments onto the ground, causing them to become scattered about. The wind blew them away without James's noticing.
Perhaps all this was merely a dream, or perhaps his imagination running off with him. James looked down and finally noticed the parchments were missing. His eyes searched for any sign of them, but they were out of sight. Frustrated, the boy sighed and then pinched him arm, hoping to wake himself up. His effort was in vain though, indicating that this was no mere dream. Where exactly was he, then? And if he was there, then where was Snow White? Was she still in the gardens, or was she whisked away somewhere, too? If not, then what would she think? What would their subjects think? James's face became filled with concern and, without second thought, he set out to search for his beloved. ”Snow White! Snow White, where are you,” he called out. He hoped to hear back a reply, but received only the eerie silence from before. Several subsequent times were also in vain. The prince eventually sat himself down at the base of a tree and sighed in frustration. What was he going to do?
