Max walked along the dunes, the sand soft beneath his furry feet. Panting happily, he took in all the sights and smells of the beach and felt the warm breeze. Truly this was his favorite place to be.

The beach was not Lightning's favorite place to be.
Picking his way gingerly across the moist sand, the sensation of the sand grains underfoot strange to his paw-pads, the Pembroke welsh corgi wrinkled his nose in disgust as his sensitive nostrils were assaulted by the scents of salt and decaying fish. Ugh, what a repulsive place.
"Give me the city any day of the week!" Lightning thought. Still though, he supposed that it was an improvement over being stuck in the pound. Anywhere was better then that pit. Still though, the longer he was out here, the more he actually found himself missing civilization.
Darn it, the wind just blew sand into his eyes!

As he continued to walk along, Max noticed another dog along his path. This one, however, did not seem to be enjoying himself nearly as much as Max was, and he was furiously pawing at his eyes for some reason or other.
"Er, are you all right?" Max asked, trying to be helpful.

Pawing at his face and shaking his head in an effort to dislodge the sand, Lightning blearily peered through his irritated eyes and found a a large shaggy dog looking back at him.
"Does it look like I'm alright?" Lightning snapped with audible irritation before giving one final shake of his head. There! Hopefully that took care of his sand problems.
With that done, he sized up the other canine, who he guessed to be some sort of sheepdog, noting the expression on his face. He didn't know where on earth he was supposed to be, so perhaps it'd benefit him to be nicer to this walking hairball. Maybe the guy lived around here and could help him out. And he could always use more allies on his side.
When Lightning spoke to the other dog again, his voice was a lot more affable and smoother then it had been before. "I'm sorry about snapping like that, pal. I just wasn't in a good mood, since I'm lost and everything." He put on a show of appearing downcast, large ears drooping and lowering his head slightly, though his eyes remained locked on the sheepdog the whole time. "You wouldn't happen to know where we are, would you ?"

Max stepped back a little when the other dog snapped at him. He didn't blame him though, as whatever was wrong with his eyes looked unpleasant and was bound to make anyone irritable. At times like this, Max was thankful that he had a large curtain of fur in front of his eyes.
When the other dog calmed down and asked Max where they were, Max replied "We're on the beach of course! And on such a nice day too!"

The answer Lightning received in response to his query left him feeling even more annoyed. Well, of course they were on a beach, he could see that much for himself! Did this other dog not realize that?
"Oh yes, absolutely lovely." Lightning sourly replied, his expression flat and unimpressed. 'Hmm, maybe I should try a different approach...' He thought as he considered the good-natured sheepdog. "Are we in California? Or England maybe?" He carefully asked.
