Greetings, programs.
I'm doing something I should have done months ago, when it was clear that this ship hit a Mickey Mouse-shaped iceberg. I'm resigning as one of FD's administrators, effective immediately. Whatever happens here... happens.
Now for the obligatory post-resignation open letter! Ooh, goody!
It's funny, I really can't think of where to start, because I have so many memories about Fantasmic Kingdom, later fused with The Dream League to become Fantasmic Dreams. I joined Fantasmic Kingdom back in mid-2002. I discovered it through two future role-players, Tigertail and Maiku. The three of us met at Doombuggies.com's forums, and Tiggy discovered and posted the link to something I've never even seen before: a role-playing forum. With Disney characters only.
www.admiralsarms.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi
I tried using the WayBack Machine with this link, but it doesn't work. Nuts!
I don't know why I joined. To call me wet behind the ears would've been an understatement, because I was the crappiest newcomer you could think of. I picked Donald Duck as my first character, and I sucked. You might think I'm too harsh on myself, but, no, I was really bad. Let me put it this way: a character hit Donald upside the head, and I had Donald... chuckle and shake his head in good humor. That's not Donald! He would've flipped the table and walloped the guy.
But, hey, some people liked me. Lass, the first Alice I met, told me Donald was her favorite character in FK. We had a lot of fun together, and I loved how she played Alice. After she retired, I promised myself that if she ever returned and wanted to play Alice, I would give the character back to her. True story.
Lass retired after the first FK was hacked and destroyed. Cynthia Zeuli, the creator of Fantasmic Kingdom (who has since become an author and, from my understanding, works for Disney), did not recreate FK, but she did give the blessing to someone to recreate it. The catch is that 'someone' wasn't definitive; it was a small contest of sites that Macabri ultimately won.
www.xsorbit2.com/users/maleficent/index.cgi
The link above would have directed you to the Xsorbit incarnation of FK years ago.
Macabri and I clashed, but I'm proud of her all the same for really kickstarting FK again. It was in Xsorbit's incarnation that I really started to settle in and role-play almost obsessively. And I still sucked. I played as Ariel before Alice, if you can believe it. I sucked out loud. Holy crap. But come 2003 I would create Alice. I had created Ariel because, for some reason, I was embarrassed about playing Alice. But I decided to go ahead, and, well, I've played Alice for ten straight years and counting.
To be honest, I don't remember when I became an admin of FK. I don't even remember what year. I can't remember if it was 2006 or 2007. 2008 was the year we moved here to Proboards, but my memories of being an admin are fuzzy. FK has died twice or so, but was rejuvenated within a few months. Of course, right now it seems that the site is really down for the count. Sorry, back to the point. I don't remember when I became an admin, but Amanda and I started this Proboards incarnation.
As an admin, I think I did very well for the first few years. But within the past year and a half, maybe two years, I've become a lesser leader. I gradually lost patience, I became more irritable and--worst of all--I clashed. I've burned so many bridges. Granted, some of those burnt bridges were inevitable. For example, I admittedly scared off Susan after she insulted a couple of role-players, myself included. I also had a public spat with Jasmine from the other Fantasmic! forums. While these two more or less couldn't escape having a conflict with me, I regret how emotional I was with my responses to them. An admin can feel upset, but he/she should be calm and collected, not sitting on the trigger. Sadly, in the end I was on the trigger.
And that's what it boils down to, really. I've changed so much, and to quote a more seasoned role-player than I, "so has the hobby." As much as I've helped, I fear I've also hindered at times. I look at some other forums and I see that they tend to have clique systems. Then I realized that I was also slipping into a clique system. I can't just enjoy 'lightweight' posts anymore. I've become snobbish and elite with the hobby. It sucks because I know I used to be a really bad newcomer, yet now I can't help myself from growing impatient when I see "amateurish" posts from newcomers. I hate what I've become.
And that's what brings this meandering, random, structurally horrific letter to the point. My changed perspective might suit a single role-player in a forum, but not a head of one. So, I'm going to bow out of being an admin. Yes, this site's already dead, so there's really nothing to bow out of. But all the same, I'm resigning after years of service.
Keep in mind that I won't be retiring as a role-player; just as an admin. I'd still love to role-play via e-mail to anyone who's interested, a format that I like to call "one-on-one."
So, now that my days as Fantasmic Dreams's admin is over, I'd like to thank the following, in no particular order.
Cynthia Zeuli, for creating this wonderful Disney orgy to begin with! I really oughta read one of her books one of these days. I haven't contacted her via email in years, but I hope she's doing well!
Lass, for helping me decide to play Alice. No, we never talked about it, but remembering how well she did encouraged me to go for it.
Macabri, for serving as FK's second admin. She and I didn't really get along, but she's still important for helping FK, as I previously said. I wonder what she's up to now...?
Christina Aylor, for being my partner in crime for years. We were such partners that at one point in 2003, she and I were left alone in a failed forum. We said, "Why not? We have a forum, we have us, let's go!" and we posted a ton's worth. I've been part of 'crack friendships', and Christina's crack friendship with me was Audrey Ramirez (her) and Ariel. Those two were friends and were rarely separated, when FK was at its most active. I'm still trying to find a way to contact her outside of Facebook, but I wish her the best. Check out her artwork; she's amazing!

Kay Aylor, for being Christina's little sister, but also being a charming role-player in her own right. And thanks for role-playing with my little bro!
Moony and Wormtail, for being Arizonian minxes. I haven’t role-played with these two in years (life has a way of getting biz-zay), but I have fond memories of both.
Harold or Matt, for playing as Jafar for years before his retirement. I never really got his name. It's possible I misremember it as Harold, but I believe he signed the Encyclopedia's guestbook as Matt. Whatever his name is, one of my big regrets was not getting his sense of humor. We had some tense moments out of nothing, really, so I'm sorry, dude. I hope your life's been rad since!
Jacob Label, my brother. I don't think any of you present role-players here ever had the chance to post with him, but he had a very amusing selection of characters. Goofy was his best known, but he also played King Triton and Winnie the Pooh. It was a lot of fun when he and I played! In fact, to show you how nerdy we were, I would play on one computer and he would play on another in a different room. I even remember one day he shouted across the hall, "JOE, I THINK YOU'RE POWERPLAYING WITH BRUCE THE SHARK!!" Man, good times.
Mands, for being a loving, devoted woman. She could play anybody, you name it. Mushu, Jack Sparrow, Hades. She's a fun, talented, charming woman. I'll forever be happy to have met her through here, but I think our relationship started when I sent her an IM through AIM. I forgot what I said, but I believe the response was "hey ". And thus started YET ANOTHER PARTNER IN CRIME! Oh, man, we role-played a ton, and not just in FK. No, we also had our own place. We traveled the Internet from RP to RP, playing and playing. And I still believe, and I always will, that Alice and Arthur make the cutest couple in anything Disney. Yes, even more than Jasper and Horace slash. Thanks, Mands.
Emma, for being another partner in crime. I gotta be frank... when Hercules and Alice first met in the Queen of Hearts's garden maze, it was the most random, unexpected, unlikely, downright WTF? meeting ever up to that point. Yet this awesome decision of yours spawned a 'crack friendship' that has stood the test of time. For years you and I played Hercules and Alice as close friends. Okay, I'm cheating, but do you remember the non-FK thread, Zulan? That was awesome. I almost feel ashamed to admit that I first looked at Hercules and Alice as a cute, quirky pair of chums. But I've since realized that they have purer meaning: they're two different people with different bodies, genders, and backgrounds--they're different in many ways, yet they're bonded by heart. They prove that two different worlds can befriend and love each other (platonically, not sexually. Ew.) This friendship has lasted 10 years and is still going strong, and has been given a twist in the form of Ultimate Dream League! Sorry to plug. (But, really, aren't Wonderboy and Dreamchild just adorable together?) Anyway, thank you, Emma Monster, for your important contributions.
Maiku, for being a very important name in FK's history, and for being a real champ when it comes to playing villains. You did the impossible: you gave Chernabog a voice, and you gave him a personality that matched and made it all work. And I love how he had Chernabog speak: he didn't use quotes. Instead, he talked like this. You see how it doesn't have quotes? It's just bold and italics, which implied a demonic voice when reading.[/i] I kinda borrowed that for the MCP in the Dream League, WHO TALKED LIKE THIS, AGAIN DISREGARDING QUOTATION MARKS. But Maiku didn't limit himself to villains; of all characters he played, it was Bagheera who was my favorite. So, thank you in that regard.
Tigertail, for introducing me to FK. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't have had ten years of FKing. Tiggy, by his own admission, is not a great speller (he's dyslexic). But what he lacked in spelling, he way more than made up for with playing Scrooge McDuck. It's impossible for me to say who's a better Scrooge between him or Nicole, because both of them had their own take on him. See, Tiggy played him more like the comics, and Nicole like DuckTales, so there's no fair comparison. But Tiggy, real name Jesse, came up with so many wonderful adventures. His threads were epic. Really epic. And any thread he joined that weren't previously epic turned epic. He created one idea that was so epic that it was actually taken in unintended directions (Mirror World). He eventually retired from role-playing to focus on his art, which you can see at the link below. Thanks, Tiggy. I owe you big time.

Kristina, for being Canadian. And for being an excellent role-player. We met in Devilishly Disney back in... well... the past. She followed us to FK. She plays her characters so vividly and with such grace. All of her performances are great, but I dare say she’s at her absolute prime playing villains. It’s like she adopts any character’s personality to type up the posts, beyond talking like them; I always imagined her wearing a fedora and gritting her teeth when typing as Negaduck, or wearing a captain’s hat and fluffy cravat when typing as Hook… with one hand, natch. It’s tragic that she and I haven’t really role-played in a long, long time, but we’re aiming to fix that. Kris, when both of our lives get less hectic, let’s do it! Also, candiru.
Hannah, for being my first English friend. No, more than that. When Hannah introduced herself back in 2008, we were all surprised to learn that she was 14. Yes, Fantasmic Kingdom had some English jailbait in its midst. But even when she was so young, I knew Hannah had a knack for this hobby. I started when I was 16 and sucked; she was 14 and was better than what I could have ever hoped to be at that age. We got along very well off-duty, but our friendship only strengthened when we started talking about Alice. Subsequently, I saw how she played Alice, and I told her that if I ever had to permanently retire from role-playing and I had to give up Alice to someone, it’d be Hannah. No joke. Thanks for your fun personality and constant empathy, Hannah. You’re the best former jailbait I ever met.
Naomi, for your complete loyalty. You’ve stood with us for years. I still don’t know a thing about you, true, but your loyalty shouts volumes, so thank you.
Nicole, for being a very talented and seasoned role-player. I can’t remember when you joined FK (I suck, I know), but I wish I could go back just to thank every star up on the sky that night. I’ve had some really fun times writing with you, as well as simply reading your posts. You gave every character you played both mind and heart, and each character you touched was convincing. Also, when the status as “de facto leader of the Dream league” was more or less pushed on the Masked Mallard (I don’t recall how that happened, haha!), you gamely accepted it and proved that Scrooge really is a damn fine leader, in and out of a superhero mask. Thanks.
L, for being perhaps the most loyal, never-say-die role-player I’ve ever seen. The ship continuously sank, yet you made posts and refused to give up hope. I strongly admire that. I’m very sorry to say that I’m giving up as an admin and, perhaps in a way, going against what you fought for. But your loyalty will never be forgotten, so thank you.
Heffy, for giving me some of my all-time favorite threads in any forum. I can’t begin to describe how much fun I had with you. Princess Aurora and San will always be the strangest pair of friends ever. In fact, they probably make Alice and Hercules look frickin’ normal. But who cares?! It was awesome, and I’m glad to have known you. We never finished the hundreds of ideas we had, and I’m going to miss role-playing with you here. But we gave it our best, and our legacy (Ultimate Dream League, it seems) will live on. Thank you, Heffy. I'll treasure your gift arts and memories forever. Thank you, Heffy... Andi.
Collin, for being one of the best of the bests when it came to role-playing. Collin was already a veteran role-player when I met him in 2006, and it was actually because of him that I looked in the proverbial mirror and vowed to improve myself. I could write so much about this man, but I’ll try and keep it brief. We met in Role-Playing Haven years ago. If fuzzy memory serves, Collin considered joining FK, but had some fears. He overcame said fears and joined in 2008. I know I said “partner in crime” a lot, but it’s true; role-playing is never a solo mission. You gotta show teamwork, and Collin and I had so many good role-playing sessions. I truly admired Collin as a role-player. Thank you.
Well, that about does 'er, I think. Thank you to the people I've mentioned, even the ones I'm no longer on good terms with. These people are important to FK's history, and I'll always remember them. Yeah, I think FK's over. I think FD is over. With me resigning as an admin, I think this is the closest Fantasmic Dreams has to sealing its fate. Whatever happens, happens. I know for a fact I'll still post UDL issues here, and I'll likely chat it up here. And, once again, I'm not quitting role-play for good. I'm just quitting as an admin. If any of you guys wanna take over (I doubt it, but it's worth askin'!), we could talk it over. In fact, maybe we should just talk as a group.
Whatever happens, I'm just glad we made it to ten years, before the site totally died. That was my goal from the fifth year onward. "Gotta make it to ten, gotta make it to ten." Fantasmic Kingdom (Dreams) was a freak of nature. There is no possible way a role-play forum should last a whole decade, yet we did. Granted, the members were constantly in rotation, and the site itself had multiple relocation, but the site made it to its tenth year. And it's because of those of us who cared, who gave it our all. We're real Disney stars, and we should be proud of ourselves. Thank you. Thank you, all of you.
I now end with a cloying self-RP, as well as one of my favorite sayings. The following saying was actually my first signature quote in FK, back in 2002. It's nothing related to Disney, but I liked it, and still do.
Although time flies, remember... you're the navigator.
I'm doing something I should have done months ago, when it was clear that this ship hit a Mickey Mouse-shaped iceberg. I'm resigning as one of FD's administrators, effective immediately. Whatever happens here... happens.
