Lucky stared up at George, sitting down he waited to see what he would say or do

George bent forward, pausing briefly as he placed a hand on his back, his lips puckering as he felt a sharp pain from his earlier spill. Regaining his composure, he gently scooped the puppy into his hands then stood upright.
"Hm." He inspected the canine's gold collar, which had the name 'Lucky' inscribed upon it. Positioning the puppy so that he held it in one hand, he used his now free hand to turn the collar around and peer at the back. There was an address inscribed upon it there.
"I believe I know where that is." He said aloud, more to himself than to anyone else. His investigation complete, he placed Lucky back onto the nursery floor. "After supper we'll see to it that he is returned to his home. You may feed him in the meantime, Wendy." He went on. He had calmed down considerably since when the news was first broken to him, despite his nasty fall.

Wendy clasped her hands together, a wide smile flying across her face. "Oh, thank you, Father!" She turned towards her mother to take the bowl of food and set it before Lucky. "I hope you like this, Lucky. I'm afraid it's the only dog food we have.
John approached the dalmatian pup and habitually adjusted his glasses, to help him see better.
'I wonder what happened to the little fellow? He seems to be in good condition considering that he was seperated from his family.'
Wendy sat on the floor beside Lucky, tucking her legs beneath her which caused the hem of her dress to pool around her.
'Yes, sometimes I do wish dogs could talk,' she said, gently stroking Lucky on the head.
Michael did not come to join his siblings they coddled Lucky. Instead he slowly walked past his father and over to the red ball that now sat in the corner of the room. Sporting a pout, he absently rolled the object between his hands.

Mary gave George the appreciative look a wife gives her husband when she knows he did a very good thing. Her soft smile disappeared when Michael walked past George and hid himself away in a corner. Her brows creased with concern and she followed after her son.
"What's wrong, darling?" she asked soothingly, placing a hand upon his shoulder.

The fatherly figure rubbed at the back of his head and sighed as Wendy placed the bowl on the floor. Only now did he notice that it was one of their dinner bowls that she had used, and though this upset him, he decided he had had enough excitement for the time-being and would not bring it to light.
He turned toward Michael, noting the somber expression on his son's face. "I say, what is it, lad?" George asked in what could only be deciphered as being a sympathetic tone, or probably the closest that George came to one after such an event.

Both John and Wendy ceased petting the dog to turn curiously towards their younger sibling. Wendy had her own suspicions about what was troubling Michael, but John remained absolutely flabbergasted. Why should Michael be upset when Lucky had found a happy ending thanks to them?
Michael looked up at his Mother through large blue eyes glossed over with tears. He ignored the ball and laid his head against her chest, wrapping his arms around her stomach.
”I wish Father hadn’t found out where Lucky lived,” the boy sniffed. ”I wanted to keep him. Nana’s so big and he’s just my size.” Michael’s words trailed off and he stared longingly at the puppy.
Nana hung her head, wishing she could do something to cheer her young master up, but there was nothing she could change in regard to her size. The loyal canine padded up toward the boy and pushed her cold nose against his cheek, before giving him a sloppy lick on the cheek.
John and Wendy exchanged a look of guilt. They'd had the fortune of growing up with Nana when she was young, but Michael had only known her as a mature dog.

"Oh, Michael," Mary said tenderly, wrapping an arm around her young child. "I know you're small now, but you'll grow. Just like Nana did when she was a puppy. Even your father was your height at one point." She began to run her fingers through Michael's hair. "But Lucky has a home and a family who misses him. If Nana had gone missing, wouldn't you want someone to bring her home to you?"

Lucky looked up hearing Michael, he continued to eat then wondered how he was going to get home, he figured his parents would be worried sick about him as well as Roger, Anita, and Nanny too

"Yes... your mother is quite right, Michael. To look at how you're taking this, a dog you've barely met, imagine how his owner must be fretting over his absence." George tried to console his son. He wasn't always great at these tender moments, but he tried to do his best and hoped that Mary could patch what areas he had fell short on.
"Nana is big, yes... but that merely means there's more of her to enjoy! Yes!" He tried to think of something comforting to say in regard to trying to help Michael appreciate the dog in which they already had. "And besides, Lucky would be far too small to help around the nursery the way that Nana does."

"Help?" Lucky thought as he heard George talk to Michael, he shook his head, no way was he wearing a nursemaid outfit

Michael glanced between his parents as the two presented their reasons as to why Lucky could not stay with them. He pulled away from his mother to pat Nana on the head and said,
"Gee, I sure would miss you Nana if you gotted lost. And you are really good at helping us." The dog perked up and looked mighty proud as Michael complimented her.
Michael rubbed his eyes with the back of his arm and turned his attention towards his father. "All right, Father. You can take him back if you really want to." He put on a brave smile for his dad and walked over to Lucky. "And you can come and see us with your owners some time."
John cleared his throat and spoke up. "Michael if he doesn't come back, well I'll play with you. I know I've been a bit busy lately, but of course I can spare some time for my favourite brother."
"Oh, yes!" Wendy agreed. "We'll all play like we used to. I've missed playing pretend with my favourite brother too," she added, throwing a teasing look at John.
His siblings efforts to please him certainly did the trick and Michael wore a genuine smile now. "Hooray! Hooray! And I can be Peter Pan! Do you want to play with us too, Father?"

Mary looked absolutely relieved that Michael was able to accept the fact that Lucky needed to go home and it was while he conversed with his siblings that she got up to take away the bowl the pup had been eating from. But as Mary reached down to pick it up, Nana's mouth clamped around the rim of the fine china piece and dutifully carried it downstairs. The last bit of her children's discussion brought an amused smile to her face and she glanced curiously at George, watching for his reaction to the question.

"Ahem." He cleared his throat, rubbing at the back of his neck nervously. "I think that spill I had earlier all but did it on your poor father's back. I wouldn't want to slow you down as you search for Admiral Crook's treasure, and whatnot." He responded, trying to politely decline without making it terribly obvious that he was declining.

<Ishouldnotbeonhere, Ishouldnotbeonhere, Ishouldnotbeonhere, but shhhh.... because I am.>
"Captain Hook, Father! Michael corrected him while laughing. Father could be so silly at times. He ran over to his toy chest and pulled out a bandanna for John to tie around his head, indicating him as a pirate. "Here John! Wendy you pretend to be kidnapped and I'll save you!"
John took the bandanna from his younger brother and removed two wooden swords from the chest, passing one to Michael. Wendy went and sat on her bed, tucking her legs under her and putting on her best frightened expression.
"Oh, I do hope someone will save me!" she said in a dramatic fashion.
"Not yet, Wendy!" Michael told her. "John's not ready." The girl folded her hands in her lap and waited patiently for their game to begin, while John put on an eyepatch.

It was an adorable sight watching her children interact like this and it was during these moments that Mary wished her children would remain young forever, so that adulthood would never get a chance to come and give them real responsibilities and take away the fantasies of their youth.
"Children, before you begin, would you like to come and say goodbye to Lucky?" It might be easier on Michael if George returned the puppy while he was distracted with other things, rather than later.

”Yes, mother!” the youngest Darling child responded, completely forgetting his game as he hurried back over to Lucky; John and Wendy followed suit.
”Goodbye, Lucky,” said Michael, rubbing the pup’s back. ”Thanks for staying with us.”
“Goodbye, Lucky,” added Wendy. “I’m so glad I found you. Goodness knows what could have happened to you out there on your own.” She stroked the dog’s head and scratched him behind the ears before moving over so John could say his farewell.
”You are a cute little rascal. I hope you have fun back home.”
Michael attempted to scoop up Lucky into his arms, but the dog’s hind legs remained on the ground, so John took him and passed him over to their father.

Lucky wagged his tail as the children petted him and rubbed his back, he blinked when Michael tried to pick him up but couldn't lift him totally off the ground, luckily John helped out and passed him over to his father, he let out a bark and wagged his tail again
