History:
Antonio was intelligent, millitant, and very dedicated, especialy to his country and family. Giavonna was vivacious, spirited, and a dreamer. Though it was an arranged marriage, over time the two grew to love each other in a deep way and to enbrace their differences.. Even after their evetual deaths some of these big differences lived on through their son.
The day Eric was born he was already greatly loved by the kingdom, It was only fitting that their gracious, wise ruler had a child to carry on the tradition. The kingdom was fascinated by the boy that would one day be king.
Eric was much like other toddlers, rambunctious and full of energy. During one of his many "escapes" he shed his itchy princely attire and decided hewanted to go for a swim. The ocean was so big and mysterious and full of wonder that he had a hard time staying away from it.
As his mother was running after him to stop him from reaching the ocean, a tall thin man caught him before he could be submerged. However, the man toppled over in an ungraceful manner.
Giavonna was relieved that her son was saved, but had to fight her laughter at such a dignified looking man being covered in seaweed. She of course apologized and found that her son's rescuer was the new official, Lord Grimsby from England, whom they were arranged to meet later. This set the tone for Eric and Grimsby's future relationship. Even after the prince grew older Grimsby would still occasionally have a hard time remembering that Eric wasn't a child anymore.
Despite being an active child, Eric was quite shy around others. He had so much attention from people because his parents were the rulers, that he couldn't help but feel self-conscience from all that was already expected of him. During this time is when he began to observe people. It was so hard to find someone who was truly themself, without any sort of pretension. Although he was young, part of what came with having a sharp mind would be that he'd often mull over things longer than he should have.
The members of royal family were very close to one another. Though the King and Queen lead very busy lives, they made sure at the end of the day there was time for the three of them to bond. It was a happy time, and excitment grew with the news of the Queen's second pregnancy, which would make the family of three into four.
Tragically during the birth of the child that would have been Eric's little sister, Giavonna died.
Eric and Antonio took it very hard, both wishing that their was something that could have been done to change the circumstances. But the two became even closer and looked to the other for support and formed a very strong bond. Eric hoped that he could be like his father when he was grown-up. Antonio would spread his time, from running the kingdom, to still making personal time with his son.
The time came again when tragedy would find its way into Eric's life. Antonio was sailing home after a diplomacy mission, but during the voyage pirates attacked the royal galleon. In the struggle both crews were lost to the sea.
Eric was devastated by this loss, as he had been of that of his mother and sister. For a long time after he'd wander around by himself, reflecting on his young life. He felt very much alone. He missed his family. He also wondered on why he didn't feel like he fit in with the other noble children.
One day he'd been out feeling lonely and bored, he decided to see what the sailors of his family shipping company were up to. The seven year old prince asked if their was anything he could do to help. Captain Sayers gave his okay and only asked that Eric "stay out of the way", and didn't "mess anything up." The other sailors weren't interested in "baby-sitting". Grimsby was opposed to the idea, simply since because he felt it wasn't fitting for a future king. At Carlotta's pressing, however, Grimsby gave permission for Eric to join them regularly.
This was a much needed release for Eric, where he could be away from his worries and wonderings. Eric truly fell in love with being a sailor. The ocean had bewitched him in way that surprised him. The salty sea-air the wind blowing in his face... like it was calling to him. It was his destiny.
Sailing and the ocean held the answer he'd been looking for. He made friends on the ships, and he found a desire to learn of new places and meet new people. He discovered a hidden talent he had for music, as he found that he was able to play any song on his fife by just listening to it once.
On one expedition, when he was fourteen, Eric went explore an little town in England. Unknown to him as he was walking though town, two bandits planned to kidnap the prince and hold him for ransom. A rather smart pup that was seeking food in an alleyway sensed that the two humans wanted to hurt the smaller human. The puppy then bit one of the bandits on the rear. The man screamed and told the other to get the dog off. The other goon picked up a spare board to knock it away.
But this pup, being smart, jumped down before he could be struck. After the man was accidentally struck by his accomplice, he turned and belted him in the mouth. The men fought amongst each other, until an officer arrested them for disorderly conduct.
Eric was completely unaware of this, and turned only in time to see a puppy tugging at his pant leg. He picked the dog up. A man then accused him of stealing his pet. Eric told then man he was sorry and didn't mean it, and then the man just cursed at the dog and smacked it atop it's head. Eric confronted the man and was told it wasn't his business what the baker did with his pet, Eric picked up the puppy and ran off, causing a chain of disasters behind him.
Eric and the puppy, whom he named Max, after a legendary Roman general, formed a bond. Max then vowed to himself that he'd do anything to protect his new friend.
Several years passed and it was almost time for Eric to wed.
He had been alone for a long time and wasn't given many options as to how to live his life. Most of his days were spent preparing him to become king. The most joy he experienced was when he was on the sea. When he was out there he felt like he found what he had been missing in his royal life. During the times he couldn't go sailing, he'd read about it. He loved his country, he did, but he’d had very few choices of his own.
Eric met with princesses and some non-royal girls in Italy and elsewhere, as part of the hundreds of years in tradition that said he had to marry before his next birthday. Eric hadn't seen a use for the law personally; he actually found it silly that he was supposed to be betrothed before his nineteenth year. It wasn’t that Eric wasn’t open to love. He was, in fact, very much a romantic at heart. He had always mused that there was this one amazing girl out there somewhere…someone who exuded spirit, passion, warmth; and bravery, with a loving heart and a great sense of humor.. He had mostly encountered empty headed, self-centered brats, who were only nice to him based upon the fact that he was to be King of Italy.
The night that the sailors threw him a party for his eighteenth birthday was when EVERYTHING changed.
A huge hurricane came through and took the sailors completely by surprise. They fought and worked hard to survive it, when the ship crashed into rocks and lightning set it on fire. Everyone was fleeing, when Eric noticed his sheep dog Max was still back aboard. He hurried back to the ship. He rescued Max but his foot was caught through a hollow board. The ship exploded!
Then everything went black...
After the explosion on the boat and almost drowning, Eric thought for those faint seconds before he barely opened his eyes, that he was dead. He had to have been dead, because he heard an angel singing. It must have been; he had never heard anything that BEAUTIFUL before. The first couple seconds before he did open his eyes, he was sure it was an angel. The light from the sun highlighted just HOW beautiful she was. A second later he realized it wasn't an angel per say, but the one he was meant to be with for the rest of his life.
After his dream girl disappeared, Eric had felt rather depressed. He'd found an amazing, brave, loving girl, and he hadn't even gotten to thank her. He searched all over for her, but she was nowhere to be found; it made him miserable. That is, until came across a beautiful homeless mute girl. He had not expected to FEEL anything for her, as he had decided that the one who saved him was his love. But despite himself, Eric found himself sighing and swooning, becoming completely infatuated by her, and having the same strong feelings for her as he did for the girl whom had saved him. This confused him further as he had always thought he was only going to love ONE person his whole life, but now there were two.
Grimsby gave him advice to forget the "dream girl" and love the one who was warm, caring and right before his eyes. Eric was never one to listen to Grimsby but THIS time he couldn't deny the man was right. Just when he tossed his flute into the ocean and then planned to declare his love for this "Ariel" girl, he heard that voice....
He looked down at the beauty on the beach and it was the voice, but for some reason the music wasn't as sweet to his ears as it had been before, the feeling he had wasn't the same. He's thought that when he'd find the voice he'd rush to her, but he just didn't feel that way anymore. Just after he realized that everything went black again.
When Eric came to, he first noted that his head ached, but then he looked up to see a light traveling to Ariel and becoming one with her. It was her voice. It took Ariel's heart and soul to make the music truly beautiful to him. Everything made perfect sense; no wonder he'd had a hard time choosing between them, they were the same!
Eric rushed over, in awe of her, wondering HOW he hadn't seen it before. He was about to kiss her when the sun set. He looked down in fright at Ariel, as she left his arms with a cry of pain from her lips. She wasn't hurt thankfully but, she'd had a tail! He didn't understand how that was possible. Merpeople weren't real... and yet they were.
The frightening-looking brunette exploded from her dress into an evil purple half-octopus. Eric was still trying to register WHAT was going on when the horrid thing took Ariel down with her, looking like it wanted to hurt her.
Eric realized he didn't have time to think. He went with what he KNEW and he knew he was in love with Ariel: voice or mute, legs or tail: she had his heart. He was going to fight with everything he had for her and not let anything get in his way.
With Ariel, Sebastian and Flounder's help and the adrenaline pumping through his veins Eric managed to get aboard a ship with a broken sail peering out. He stirred the ship and SLAMMED it into Ursula, who was a mile tall with a giant trident, getting ready to blast his love right in front of his eyes.
The witch was now dead and Ariel was safe. That was all he needed to know as he crawled onto the beach to pass out from exhaustion. He was fine knowing his love was unharmed.
The sunlight peered through to awaken him, just like that morning after the storm, only for him to see Ariel had legs. He was overjoyed, she could now be with him! After he embraced her in a passionate kiss, Eric asked King Triton if it would be all right if Eric could have Ariel's hand in marriage.
After the king agreed, Ariel went to live on land with Eric, where they began to really get to know the other over the next several months.
They came to know more about the other's little quirks, such as Eric's tendency to over-think and Ariel's natural recklessness. It helped them to learn what to expect from their future marriage. They did get along most of the time, but at times the differences could cause little tiffs. However, they did make sure to work through them. And as far as they were concerned they wouldn't dare change the other.
Eric and Ariel both attended parties and events together, but would sneak off during some course of the galas to simply escape the stuffiness and just enjoy the other's company.
After the several months passed they wed a year to the date she'd saved his life, in a ceremony where both humans and merfolk gathered for the occasion.
Eric is very happy in who he found as a soul mate, but he still will worries from time to time about something going wrong, like when his own mother died giving birth to his sister, or by some chance Ursula rearing her ugly head into their lives again.
Eric wants to keep Ariel safe, but also loves that she's not like the prim and proper princesses he knew growing up. Still, he can't help but feel protective of her.
He's not sure if he'd make a good king or not, more from the feeling that he's more comfortable on a sail boat than sitting on a throne. And he isn't exactly sure if he's actually doing any good in the world. How does being royal make you worthwhile?
