Characters Briar Rose Prince Phillip ****************************************************************************** Briar Rose was in the forest once again, on a beautiful spring afternoon. Alone, as always, the young maid strolled through the wood while singing with her operatic voice.Phillip happened to be riding on horseback through the woods, when he heard Briar Rose's voice drifting through the dense forest. He gently pulls on Samson's reigns, to stop the equine from proceeding forward.*
Whoa, Samson...do you hear that? What a beautiful voice.
*Samson flicks his ear, listening intently. He looks at the prince, snorts, and rolls his eyes a little...yep, knew it...his master was sidetracked again.*
It must be a wood nymph, or a fairy. Why, there's no one else for miles, that's the only thing it could be. What do you say, Samson? Should we go look for it?
*The horse snorted yet again, this time in exasperation. Chasing nymphs? Was he mad?! Samson started in the other direction. Phillip gave a small laugh, and pulls on his reigns lightly.*
Easy boy, easy...I was only kidding. Briar Rose continued her singing for a while, during the time she walked among the trees. Eventually she stopped and sat underneath the shade of a tree. A moment passed before she sighed deeply. She was very lonely. "Why am I here?" she softly asked herself. She closed her eyes and pressed the back of her head against the tree.*Phillip rode through the forest on Samson, still hearing the singing. As he listened in, he realized the voice was actually...getting louder. Oh, he could bear it no longer, he had to speak to the creature that was singing! That meant having to trick Samson. He continued on down the path back to the castle, gaining speed gradually, then when the time was right, he yanks hard on the reigns, turning Samson towards the direction the voice was coming. Giving a startled whinny, the horse looked up at his master as if he'd grown an extra set of limbs, as they galloped.*
Haha! I'm sorry for that Samson, but what if it's a lost young lady? Surely we can't just leave her by herself in the middle of the forest all alone?
*Snorting, Samson continues on towards the voice, slowing down a little. His master DID have a point, however, he gave him that. Suddenly, when they were close, the voice stopped. Both horse, and master looked around. Phillip calls out.*
Miss! Are you still there? Are you lost? Please, I mean you no harm...I only want to help! Rose opened her eyes and raised her eyebrows when she thought she heard something. "What was that?" She stood up and stepped from the tree, looking around. "Is there anybody there...?" She spoke quietly, instead of calling.*Hearing her speak, he stops Samson and dismounts, as he could manuver through the forest trees better on foot than on horseback. He walks along, calling to her, not really watching where he's going, Samson following him.*
Miss? Are you alright? Are you hurt? Please, answ--Whoa!
*A loud splash. He had walked right into a pond, falling in. Phillip sat up, a lilly pad on his head. Samson laughed. The young prince, glaring flatly at his horse, slips the plant off of his head and searches around for his hat, grabbing it and wringing it out. He stands and looks at his now wet clothes. Well, at least it was a warm day.*
I can't possibly go home in wet clothes, father will have my head. We'll just have to wait here to dry out, shouldn't take long...I just hope that young lady is alright.
*spotting a patch of sunshine through the trees, he unclips his cape, and hangs it and his hat on a branch, and slides his boots off, placing them in the warm sun.*Briar Rose quietly walked to the noises' direction. She approached a large tree, placed her hands on it and slowly leaned to look on the other side. She was surprised to see a person remove articles of his clothing. She blushed when she realized that this person was a man, who appeared handsome and strong... like the prince from her dreams. She was frozen as she watched him... *Samson, sensing movement out of the corner of his eye, flicks his ear back and turns to see Briar Rose, hiding behind the tree. He blinks in disbelief...and if he had hands, they'd quite possibly be rubbing his eyes. He whinnies loudly, catching the attention of Phillip, who was sitting on the large log his clothes were also hanging on. He gets up to calm the horse.*
Whoa! Samson, easy...you're being so loud, one would think you've spotted a gh--oh!...
*He stops when he sees the girl. Had this been the one...?*
I'm terribly sorry miss, but were you the one who was singing earlier The girl's eyes widened and her lips parted when she was spotted. Her cheeks reddened further when the man looked directly at her, and by impulse she turned to run, as quickly as she could.*Phillip looks confused as she takes off suddenly, looking at Samson.*
Wh...what on earth did I say? Hey!
*He takes off after her.*
Don't run away...miss, please...wait!The sheltered Rose fled because she didn't know how to react, and she was terribly nervous. She rushed into a thicker part of the woods but her feet were eventually caught on some weeds. She tripped and fell to the ground with a grunt. She looked back to see if the stranger pursued, nervous.*Phillip began to close in on the girl, slowing down as he approaches her, smiling warmly.*
I'm very sorry if I frightened you, miss. I didn't mean to, really.Rose freed herself and got back up on her feet. She faced the stranger, although she backed away from him slowly. "I'm sorry... it's just that you're a... a... stranger."
Her face indicated that she truly didn't mean to be rude; she was just exceedingly shy.

*The young man smiles gently.*
Well...you're right, of course I am now, but...here, I can fix that.
*He gently puts his hand out, as if to shake.*
My name is Philip. It's a pleasure to meet you.
*Samson rolls his eyes, watching his master. Oh brother, yeah right, like -that- was gonna work.*

The uncomfortable Rose looked to the handsome man's hand. She stared at it for a second before trailing her eyes back up to his face. She seemed to have calmed just slightly, but it was clear she wouldn't accept his hand.
"Phillip...? That is a good name... I'm sorry, but--"
She turned, intending to leave once again.

*The girl was obviously frightened...which led him to believe that somebody had obviously put it into her head that it wasn't okay to talk to strangers, and went a little -too- far! But why? That was anyone's guess. Sighing, he showed no signs of resistance, and bows, politely.*
Miss, I will let you alone, as you seem to wish me to...but may I ask you one question before we part, so that my curiosity may be enlightened?

Rose stopped in her tracks, and turned her head enough to politely yet shyly address the handsome stranger.
"Oh.... well, maybe... yes?"

*Phillip nods.*
While riding through the woods just a bit earlier today, I heard the most lovely singing voice echoing throughout the forest. Tell me, was that you who was singing?

The peasant girl completely stopped moving, and she fully looked to the man with an expression of guilt.
"Yes," she said. She doubted the stranger heard any other voice, considering that she heard none but her own. "I believe you heard me sing. Did I disturb you? I'm sorry..."
She placed her hands behind her back to hide her fingers that fidgeted.

*Phillip shook his head, smiing.*
Oh, no! Not at all, if anything, it was a welcome distraction. And if I may say so, you have a most lovely voice.
*He bows.*
A promise is my word...I'll leave you to your business, milady. Good day.
*With that, he mounts Samson, and starts away, slowly, humming the same tune the girl had been singing.*

The maiden blushed lightly when she was complimented, and watched the man in silence as he started to walk away with his horse. She heard what he hummed, and instantly recognized her own song. The stranger was taken by her melody. It was only then did she realize that the stranger was strikingly similar to the stranger in her recurring fantasy dream.
She thought for a moment, before parting her lips to sing, and then sway gently to the tempo of what she would sing.
I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream I know you, the gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam Yet I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seem But if I know you, I know what you'll do: You'll love me at once, The way you did once upon a dream...
She couldn't help but smile as she sang, knowing that someone--a complete stranger--appreciated her operatic singing voice.

*He halts Samson, and stops humming, hearing her sing on top of his humming. Phillip leads the horse back to her, joining in with her, now singing instead of humming.*
* And I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seem, But if I know you, I know what you'll do You'll love me at once The way you did once upon a dream...
*Phillip dismounts his horse, gently, and bows respectfully, offering his hand to dance with her.*
((*= he joined in singing with her at this part.))

Briar Rose looked to the stranger when he joined in with the song. She didn't anticipate his singing voice; it was as handsome as his face. It sounded as though he, too, loved music and to sing. She felt a great warmth inside her when the two sang together. She was taken by him; when he offered his hand for a dance, the maid didn't think twice. She lightly gripped his hand and allowed him to lead her into a waltz.
Briar Rose was surprisingly capable of dancing traditionally. (Her aunts had taught her, of course.) She had to look up to him because he was definitely taller, but he couldn't have been much older than she was. Maybe there was a five year difference at the most. The beauty, always smiling, examined his face as they danced. She felt at peace with him, and she wanted to stay with him longer.
But then, after their dance, she remembered her aunts. Her smile changed to a look of intimidation. "I... shouldn't speak to strangers!" Her cheeks reddened and her eyes expressed sadness. "I'm sorry!" she apologized. She broke from his grip and hurried away. "I'm sorry! Good-bye!" she called back, apologizing again.

*His relaxed smile turned to a frown, as she ran off. He follows her for a bit, then stops as he didn't want to scare her further. Phillip calls out to her softly.*
Wait, miss! When can I see you again?

The young beauty was already obscured by the thick forest, but she called back one last time before falling silent. "I don't know! Maybe never. I'm sorry!"
And she was gone.

*Phillip watches as she dissapears. He sighs, sadly. Samson clops behind him, nudging him with his muzzle.*
Oh Samson...that poor girl. We'll have to find her again some day. I don't quite know what her aunts have been telling her, but perhaps some day she'll learn that not all strangers are bad. All I know is...we have to meet again. Let's go home, boy. Hup!
*He got back up on his horse, and rode away quietly.*
