Some would argue that Donald should be elated. His nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie, were in college, leaving Donald in his house all by himself. When he first met the little rascals, Donald wished nothing more than to have the solitude he once had.
Though now that the nephews were gone, Donald couldn't help but feel downcast. It took him several days to realize the feeling: loneliness. He would've called Daisy and set up a date, but she was away. He still had Mickey and the House of Mouse, but it just wasn't the same as having to take care of three devils.
Donald was lethargic as a result; it was midday, yet he was slumped in a recliner with a newspaper that he hadn't read in hand. He watched the hands of a clock progress.
He sighed deeply. "I wonder what they're up to now?"

Now I ain't one ta set myself on out to da cities and right busy places a dis world. I prefers da quiet places wit jus' tha right bit a noise an goings on. So- heading out ta one a da strangest towns wit da strangest a folk, I weren't to sure what would happen.
Duckburg was not something that Remus was used to seeing, he'd grown up around dirt roads and hanging moss- not cobble streets and stop lights. Once he managed to figure his way on about town, he mad down a certain street to a certain house.
I'd heard a this here duck straight from Miss Alice's words- so's I knowed he'd be jus' what I needed ta get laughter right back ta where it outta be. Inside-a every folks mouth.
Remus waited on the porch for a moment before raising his hand and knocking sharply on the door.

Donald turned his gaze to the door. "Who's there?" he asked himself, but not loud enough for the visitor to hear.
If I'm lucky,[i/] he thought, it's the boys dropping out of college. Although that thought was mostly sarcastic, there was also a minute desire that it was true.
He approached the door and opened it. Expecting to see someone his size, his eyes gazed at clothed kneecaps. Obviously this visitor was taller than Donald, and his eyes trailed up to a bearded gentleman. Company! "Hello," he said. "Welcome to my house."
He visibly relaxed himself.

Remus glanced down when the door opened, knowing he'd have a bit of a height advantage over the duck he was seeking.
"Sorry ta be botherin' ya- but iff'n yer Donald Duck. Den I needs ta talk ta ya about a Miss Alice."

Donald's eyes widened slightly, and he looked a bit tensed.
"Huh? Alice? What'd ya mean?" He stepped aside and motioned to his house's interiors. "Come in!"
Fortunately, Donald's house was large enough for a fully-grown adult to be comfortable.
"You can tell me inside," suggested Donald.

The mountain man ducked through the door and walked in carefully. Sure he was used to the brightly colored critters running about the woods- but he'd never been in any of their homes before.
"Shore-in hate ta bother ya Bre'r Duck but well Miss Alice an that caution of a critter Bre'r Rabbit done headed to Wonderland."
He took his hat off, remembering the manners that Aunt Tempy had made sure to drive into him.
"Seems that all da laughter been bottled up and dey hoped ta get that ol' Queen ta let it all out; but dey ain't come back yet and mo an mo laughing places is disappearing." he was clearly worried, more so for the girl and rabbit at the moment.
"I remember dat she mention yer name a few times and thought maybe you coul dhelp her- being a critter an all ya can get inta Wonderland shore-in as a rabbit can!"

Donald went to the kitchen to get a drink for his guest, but he stopped and returned to Remus's presence as he described Alice's absence.
"Huh?!" he exclaimed. "That's why everyone's so depressed lately?" His pupils dilated a little when the Queen was brought up. "The Queen?" He brought his hands to the sides of his head. "I'll be doggone. Why does Alice go there without a body guard? I fought that Queen once, and we barely escaped then!"
He knew he couldn't back down, though. Especially if Alice and a new friend of hers were endangered. He sighed, lowered his hands and shrugged. "If we're gonna rescue her, I gotta call my friends."
He paused before asking, "What's your name?"

The human hill man nodded, "Eet sho' is Bre'r Duck; an it t'ain't gonna get no better 'till them bog holes and laughin' places is opened up."
Remus gave a broad grin, "I do right appreciate that- I t'ain't as young as once was an...well I'ma glad dat Miss Alice gots nice enough folk to help her."
He took his rumpled hat off and gave a small bow; "My names Remus, everin calls me Uncle Remus."

He held out a hand, smiled, and offered a hand shake. "Nice to meet ya, Remus! Thanks for telling me about Alice, because I didn't know."
After the handshake he hurried to his telephone. He picked up the receiver, but immediately grumbled when he remembered that José does not own a telephone. Nevertheless, he dialed a payphone in the middle of Duckburg. He last saw his parrot friend at that general area, and Donald hoped that José would be there.
Holding the phone, Donald gave a worried glance to Remus. "I hope this works."

Ze had been sleeping, his feet propped up on his umbrella (which was standing of its own accord!) and his back leaning against a wall. His cap was pulled over his eyes but at the first ring, one eyed opened up. Glaring at the phone he waited to see if anyone would pick it up.
After nearly eight rings the lazy parrot stood up and hit the receiver with the umbrella, causing it to leap off the holder and into his hand.
"Bom dia, this is Ze how am I able to help you?"

Donald gave another glance to Remus when he succeeded, this time a look of surprise. "Hey, it worked!"
He spoke directly into the phone. "Joe Carioca! Is that you? It's Donald! We got big trouble--do you remember Alice, the little girl from England?" Unknowingly, he twirled the phone cord with his nervous fingers. Every second wasted meant another second of trouble for Alice.

Ze blinked in surprise- he hadn't expected Donal on the other end!
"Ah...the little blonde gahtina? Yes I remember her. Why?" the parrot scratched his head in confusion, judging by the small nervous trill in Donal's voice something might be up.

"José," Donald said with dire seriousness; "Alice is in trouble! One of her friends just told me that she's in hot water! We gotta go to Wonderland and help her out--who knows what could happen this time?! And besides, this is the reason why we don't laugh anymore; we gotta do something about that, too!"
Without giving José much time to respond, he asked, "Where's Panchito? Is he still mopin' at the bar?"

"Because of a little girl?" He shook his head though no one could see him, "I have lost track of our gallo friend but I am sure it will be no problem to find-e him. I know though that he is still here in Duckburg."
He winced at the worry in Donal's voice before nodding (again with no one there to see), "Do not worry my friend, I will find our rooster and bring him to help Alicia."

"Okay!" Donald exclaimed, sounding more confident by now. "Find Panchito and bring him to my house. Then we'll all go to Wonderland together. Hurry as fast as you can, José!"
He slammed the receiver back on the holder and spun to Remus. "They're gonna come here soon." He flexed his muscles (or the muscles he had, at least) and grinned intimidatingly. "We gotta be brave, for Alice's sake." Despite looking and feeling silly, Donald simply couldn't laugh.

Once I'd heard dem words and dat most precious a sounds- I knowed that everythin was gonna be jus' fine. Oh it'll be plenty hard; no one tells that old Queen what not to do, but this is gonna be a story worth tellin' long after its all said an done.
Remus had been waiting patiently, watching the duck in his normal subdued calm. Once the phone contraption was back in it's cradle he grinned again.
"You'll be doin' more then jus' Miss Alice a favor. The whole worl' is gonna be all the right for what you and your friends is about to do."

"I didn't know Wonderland was so important," Donald said. He took a seat on a recliner and beckoned the man to sit down, as well. "I always thought it existed just to be crazy."
He paused before asking, "How do you know so much about Wonderland? Did Alice tell you about it? She's a real good girl. Too curious for her own good, but still a good girl."
Donald was unaware of Uncle Remus's relationship with Wonderland, and could definitely stand an explanation.

"heheheh, dat be right Br'er Duck but t'ain't nothng more important ta a worl..den a little bit a crazy. Keeps dat balance that make da worl how it be, youse see?" The mountain welcomed the invitation to sit down; it was an awful long way from the Briar Patch and he weren't as young as he liked to think he was. The question was expected, and Remus only smiled. There was something wise in that smile, and it became obvious as the old man spoke. "How does I know Wondahland...heheh that is a worthy question, a right worthy question. Well Br'er Duck- ebry few decades or so, sometin happens in dat kooky place. A new Pillar need ta be picked- someone wit enough brains and magination ta understand what don't make a lick a sense." He paused a moment, once a story teller- always a story teller, "Were several years ago, more now then I care ta think, dat I were one a dem pillars. It were mah job ta keep Wondahland in da laughing places and bogholes of da Briar Patch." ((I remembered what we called Alice and Uncle Remus ))

Donald listened intently, and he quickly put two and two together. "So Wonderland has pillars, or guardians? Then that means--" His eyes widened. "Are you saying Alice is the next 'pillar'?"
His grip on the armrests of his chair tightened. He was more fearful for Alice now; if something happened to her, how would that effect Wonderland--and by extension--the world? Would the world become unstable?

"More 'en dat sur. She is da pillar right this very instant." He watched the duck grip the armchair, but was to polite to bring it up in anyway.
"She went off ta try an fix tings but; I'm right ta think thaten she t'ain't got vury far. Even wit dat caution of a rabbit wit her. Der's on'y on way ta get inta Wondahland now sur."

"Did she even ask to be a pillar?" Donald asked, still lingering on the subject of Alice's destiny. "Or was she chosen automatically?" He rubbed his temple in worry. He hadn't seen Alice in a while, but he was already acting like a worried parent. Maybe it was because without his nephews, he had to worry about another child?
Remus's last comment then registered in Donald's mind. "How d'we get to Wonderland now?" he asked. If Remus used to be a guardian in Wonderland, then surely his suggestions and knowledge were legitimate.

"Well dat I can't quite say- it's up ta whatevah Wondahland wants ya see."
He raised his walking stick and pointed at a mirror, "Dat da only way now. Course, ya gots ta get 'round yer reflection. You ain't a chillin' nor is you evah been a pillah."

Remus gave a warm smile, as close as he could to a laugh, "Sho'nuff youse don't need ot be a witcher ta get ta Wondahland."
He tapped his head, "Alls ya need is ta think, blink and take leap a fate."

Donald looked to Remus, then to the mirror. Sure, he could do that; just think happy thoughts, and take a leap of fate into the mirror. Simple enough, albeit nonsensical... akin to Wonderland.
The duck continued to stare at the mirror. "I hope Alice is okay!" He was ready to go. "As soon as Joe and Panchito get here, we're taking off."
