Name: 'San'; her full birth name is not known, and probably never will be.
Alias: Fearful village-goers gave her the alias of "Mononoke-hime," or "Princess of the Spirits/Demons"; more commonly, they call her the "wolf girl."
Age: 18 to 20 years old, approximate age unknown
Is From: Northern Honshu, Japan
Species: Human
Height: Shortly over 5 feet.
Weight: Unknown, but San is lithe and athletic, so presumably a light, healthy weight.
Gender: Female
Likes: Nature, the forest; her wolf 'brothers'; shiny things; and although she's still coming to terms with this, Ashitaka.
Dislikes: Those who harm or threaten nature (or especially her own forest); other humans, for the most part, particularly those of the Tatara clan in the valleys below; having to come to terms with her own human nature
Normal Attire: San's clothing all comes from the natural world around her; she dresses in animal hide, including her boots, and wears a cape of white wolf fur. Around her neck is an iridescent amulet carved from a blue stone, given to her by Ashitaka.
Powers: None; she is only a mortal human. Years of living in the wilderness among wolves have honed her instincts, however, and increased her strength, agility and speed.
Weapons: A large, sturdy and razor-sharp arrowhead-like knife, carved from a huge wolf's fang. Sometimes places the knife atop a pole or stick to form a makeshift spear.
Strengths: Aforementioned strength, agility and speed; enhanced senses, including sight, hearing and scent; bravery, and a fierce tenacity in battle unmatched by any human warrior.
Weaknesses: Her disgust towards most humans, further distancing herself from her own kind; although she insists on acting as a wolf, her human nature, particularly her sensitive feminine side, is sometimes hard to repress; often lets her emotions get the best of her, leading to brash decisions and bullheadedness.
Allied with: The wolf gods of the forest, and Ashitaka.
Mortal Enemy: Lady Eboshi, and the rest of the Tatara clan.
History: San was orphaned at an early age, although the details are uncertain. Her adoptive mother was Moro, a mighty 300-year-old wolf goddess; the wolf told Ashitaka that San's parents, encountered by Moro, simply dropped their child at the wolf goddess's feet before fleeing in terror, although it's quite possible that Moro herself was responsible for their deaths. Regardless, the wolf god took the human child in and raised her as one of her own, alongside her own pups.
San was born during a period of fierce war. Humans all around, particularly those of the Tatara clan in the ironworks in the valleys, were spoiling the pristine forests to claim its bountiful resources as their own. They felled trees, slaughtered the forest's denizens, and decimated huge expanses of wilderness for their own satisfaction and profit. The animal gods of the forest, more or less forgotten by their once reverent human followers, were enraged by this, and attacks on the human villages were common; naturally, small scuffles like this led to ongoing war.
Because of these hard times, San was exposed by her foster-mother to only the darker side of humanity; greed, selfishness, lust for power and disrespect for nature. Moro effectively raised her adopted child to loathe those creatures that so threatened their home, to become a warrior for their own side. This is how young San grew up, distanced from her own kind and taught to view them as heartless devils, unworthy of her respect.
At around 19 years, during this time of war, San encountered a young human boy; Ashitaka, the last Emishi prince, cursed for slaying a corrupted forest god that threatened his village. Initially, San only saw him as another one of them, a disgusting creature undeserving of her respect. Over an extensive course of events, however, her perception of him, and of humans in general, is greatly altered. Moro may have taught San otherwise, but Ashitaka has shown her that there is much more to the human race than meets the eye.
Today, there is peace in this forested region. The humans of the villages and cities have learned to respect the gods of the forest, who now keep to themselves. San now leads the pack of young wolf gods, as Moro was slain by Lady Eboshi during the war. She and her lupine companions now roam the ancient forests; and every now and then, Ashitaka comes to visit her.
