Iago was flying towards the market place. With Princess Jasmine and the Sultan back. It was harder and harder to stay hidden in the palace.
He landed on one of the walls and ruffled his feather. Scratching his neck a moment he looked out towards the palace.
"Geez, this place gets duller by the second. You'd think something would happen."
Dressed as a peasant, Jasmine walked the winding street of the Market Place. This time she'd snuck out armed with a small purse of coins, not wanting to make the same mistake as the first time she'd come out into the 'real world'.
Reaching up to make sure her brown scarf was pulled up over her crown, she slowed her step to watch a man walk across a bed of nails.
Iago took off and glided through the market place. Landing a few stalls away from the robed girl. Scratching his head with one wing he looked her up adn down.
"Well, she sticks out like a sore thumb." Walking to the end of the stall he peered out, "A real familiar sore thumb though..."
Indeed... Jasmine couldnt really *blend in* even with her get-up. She walked differently, held herself differently... She did draw some attention, but nothing that worried her. She could handle herself.
She walked on, passing by Iago.
THose eyes. There was no way, not after years of having to deal with looking at 'em, could Iago not recognize them.
"The Princess?!" He breathed, staring after the 'commmon' girl. What the heck was she doin' out here?! Her dad would have a coronary if he found out!
Well, better find out what the heck the girl had in her head. Jafar might find something useful. and beside.
He didn't have anything better to do -.-
The red-parrot flew up and landed on a stall a few feet in-front of her. He cleared his throat and gave a small sqwuack.
"Awk! *wolf whistle*"
Hey, he wan't blind >.>
Jasmine glanced around, brow furrowing at the whistle. Glancing up, her annoyed expression faded to one of surprise. "... Iago?"
She walked over, looking up at him, not sure what to expect of the bird this time around... or whose side he'd hide behind.
Iago couldn't help but give a small grin. "Fancy meetin' you out here your highness. Didn't think you'd take to the dust of da streets."
He looked around and shrugged his wings, "Thuogh, no offence, your still drawing stares kid."
She followed his gaze, seeing a group of men quickly look away when she turned. She sighed, looking back at Iago, crossing her arms.
"I wont be here long. What are *you* doing here?"
"Hey, you aren't the only one that needs ta get out from unda pryin' eyes once in a while." he said gruffling, folding his wings across his chest.
"That your excuse too?"
"Not this time."
She glanced around, this time drawing looks because she was having a conversation with a parrot. ><
The princess reached up, offering Iago her wrist.
Iago titled his head to look up at the princess. She was seriously gonna let him? Figuring it was to hot and dusty to logic it out he carefully hopped onto her wrist, trying not to hold on to hard.
"Oh? Lemme guess, it's fez-boy's birthdahy or something?" He wasn't quite friendly enough to call him aladdin. But given the circumstances. Street rat just sounded to harsh.
Careful to keep her arm steady, she started walking again. "A few days ago the palace gave a gift to the orphanage. I want to make sure it's being put to good use."
She didnt really care for the woman running it.
"If I came as the princess I'd never catch her off guard."
Iago raised an eyebrow, "That's kinda trickey...ain't you supposed to be on eof the good guys?" he asked, though he was actually kinda impressed. For a royal, the Princess seemed to have a handle on the outside world.
She smiled. "Even as a 'good guy,' you should know not to underestimate me, Iago." ^^
Iago brought a wing to his throat and rubbed it, "Eesh, you know your pretty scary Princess." he said with a grin. Relaxing a bit he enjoyed the 'ride' looking about the market place and trying his best to act like a 'dumb bird'.
"So," he ask carefully, "What was all the commotion in the treasure room the oder day?"
Jasmine was actually enjoying the conversation with Iago. Maybe he wasnt so bad, when he wasnt being a sniveling little traitor. She didnt trust him completely, but she wasnt against second... or third chances. But he'd have to earn it. It was up to him.
"Oh that..." She rolled her eyes. "Nothing we couldnt handle."
Iago raised an eyebrow but didn't comment. He knew they could handle things. He looked off for a while, before looking back up at the princess.
"I trust ya on that one. You ever think of getting better security for that place?"
"More guards?"
She shook her head, turning down a different street.
"I dont think that would be a good idea."
"Oh yeah cause they work now?" Iago shook his head, "I didn't say anything 'bout guards Princess."
Jasmine gave a soft sigh. The guards werent much help against the sort of problems Agrabah had been facing recently... if any at all.
"What do you mean?"
They had Aladdin and Genie... and the two of them had been just fine so far.
"Would Razul really be able to deal with, I dunno a wizard or something? No. What you need are traps. Eh, something maybe to, I dunno, maybe block magic?"
He had flown up while he was talking, fluttering to stay eye-level with Jasmine.
She decided to humor him. "But what about Genie and Carpet?"
"No offense Princess, but I wouldn't trust a rug and a buffoon with what's sittin' in that treasure room."
"Most of the time... its not the treasure they're after."
Some magic device, the throne, the princess... genie... take your pick.
Iago lightly landed her shoulder, "I ain't talking about the gold. For once. Look, I'll level with ya Princess. I've been playing eyes for Jafar while he's been...uh, busy. And dat book is worth more then even Genie."
His tone was surprisingly grave, not harsh or taunting like one might expect it to be. Almost as though he were warning Jasmine.
She looked at him, her expression now concerned. Was Iago actually... helping her? She was suddenly worried for him, should Jafar discover this... she hoped he knew what he was doing... and that he wasnt scamming her now.
"You know about the book?"
Iago waved a wing, "Yeah. I just went to see if you and the sultan were back. An heard you talking to the kid about it."
He caught her look and raised an eyebrow, "What? Come on, don't look at me like that. You'll get me worried."
"Just... be careful." She sighed softly. "And Iago? ...Thank you."
She'd have the book moved as soon as she got back to the palace.
"Trust me. I wanna get caught even less then you think." he folded his wings for a moment before looking sideways at Jasmine, "Yeah, your...your welcome kid."
She smiled, coming to an alley way now. She put her finger to her lips, signaling for Iago to be quiet, and snuck up to a window, looking in.
There were a number of young black-haired children inside, asleep on new mats with new blankets. in the sink was a stack of dishes. It wasnt a bad start, but Jasmine had expected more.
Iago opened his beak but shut it quickly, peering into the window. He raised an eyebrow, so far this orphanage lady was lucking out.
Maybe not everyone was as greedy as he'd been lead to believe. He side-glanced at the Princess. Well, almost everyone.
She whispered to him. "I'll have to come back again. I told her plainly that I wanted them all to have shoes."
Iago nodded, it was funny how under appreciated shoes were. Until you had to walk out onto blistering hot sand...
"Kinda hard ta tell at this point." he paused, "I could stick around for ya. I gotta wait for Jafar to get back anyways." Allah knows where he'd gone to anyways.
"And who'd suspect a parrot of spying?" he gave her a knowing glance.
So Iago was a double agent now? When he mentioned Jafar she winced a little more than she would have ever let herself if she could have helped it.
"... No, I can come back."
She didnt want him getting strangled on her account.
Iago shifted a bit but nodded. He just really wanted to stay out of the palace. Without Jafar to watch him, it was open season on loud-mouthed birds.
"Come out on your own? Brave words Princess."
She came back out of the Alley. "Nothing bad's happened to me so far."
Iago couldn't help roll his eyes at that one! "Not now anyways, but what about the last times? Two words. Magic. Mirror."
"Give me a little credit, Iago." She walked on. "I learned my lesson."
Iago couldn't help but smirk, "Yeah. Be careful what you say in the Marketplace." he said dryly, though he would admit (maybe not outloud) that she'd handled the situation rather well.
"Among other things."
She laughed softly, entering the busier street again.
"Are you coming back to the Palace?"
Iago hesitated a minute, looking up at the Palace. He gave a sigh and fluttered off her shoulder.
"Better not. I'll head to Jafar's quarters my way. There's no sabers or tigers around to gut me."
She looked up at him. "Be careful Iago."
Iago looked down at her, a bit of confusion in his eyes. "Uh...you to..." he flew up from where she stood, heading seemingly out of the city. He couldn't show where the outside entrance was.
"I really, really hope I know what the heck I'm doin'."
She watched till he was nearly out of sight before heading back to the palace. She didnt want to be gone too long. Someone would notice...
The princess sighed. Could she trust Iago?
